Forensicare’s Prison Psychology Services

Forensicare provides specialist forensic mental health services across 12 of Victoria’s 14 prisons. Our Regional Prison Psychology Services are an exciting component of Forensicare’s mental health services, which operate out of the Metropolitan Remand Centre (MRC). The clinical team at MRC is a multi-disciplinary specialist mental health service, which provides mental health assessment, targeted psychological intervention, mental health consultation and transition planning for clients with impaired mental functioning. Operating within this team, the Psychology service will extend our ability to support men in the correctional system outside of metropolitan areas. When clinically indicated there is also scope to provide transitional support sessions for clients who move between public prison locations.

As a psychologist within Forensicare’s Prison Psychology Service, your tasks may include:

  • Psychological assessment of a range of mental health issues, including high-prevalence mental health disorders, personality disorders, psychosis and trauma symptomatology.
  • Individual and group-based interventions to promote clients’ use of effective coping skills for managing mental health difficulties.
  • Providing recovery focused, evidenced-based psychological interventions. 
  • Consultation and training for other service providers to assist with identification of mental health issues in people in custody, and facilitate clients’ coping whilst in prison. 
  • P3 psychologist with endorsed supervisor status: Provision of supervision to P2 psychologists and interns

 Qualification and Experience Requirements 

  • Registered as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA) 
  • Masters or Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from an APAC accredited course of equivalent, OR Doctorate degree in Forensic Psychology from an APAC accredited course or equivalent
  • Endorsement or eligibility for endorsement by AHPRA in clinical psychology and/or forensic psychology 
  • Previous working experience in a mental health setting, correctional service, or forensic mental health service would be an advantage 
  • Interest in working within a correctional environment and demonstrates empathy for offending populations who are experiencing mental health difficulties
