Beaumaris Secondary College is a newly established 7-12 secondary school, located in the leafy bayside suburb of Beaumaris in close proximity to the bay, a marine sanctuary and nature reserves. The excellent sporting facilities on site are part of a developing relationship with the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC). The community and family partnerships are vital for the success of the school. Selection Criteria: 

SC1 Demonstrated experience in the initiation, development and implementation of programs, strategies and interventions to foster resilience in children and young people.

SC2 Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategies that address the physical, social and emotional needs of young people, as well as strengthening attendance and engagement, in support of their learning growth.

SC3 Demonstrated capacity to be responsive to the needs of young people as they might arise during the course of a school day.

SC4 Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team to support students with complex academic, behavioural and wellbeing needs, including relationship building with community organisations.

SC5 Ability to build the capacity of others to support student wellbeing through professional learning activities including wellbeing support staff and teachers.

SC6 Demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills, including a capacity to develop constructive relationships with staff, students, parents, and external providers.

 

Role

The Social Worker/Allied Health Professional will work closely with the Student Wellbeing team, Leading Teachers – House Leaders team and the Principal Team at Beaumaris Secondary College to provide high-level support services to improve student wellbeing and learning outcomes and undertake advanced wellbeing interventions to support students within the school. The focus of this role will be supporting students at risk, their families and internal and external systems of care and processes. 

 

Beaumaris Secondary College values a culture of collaboration and staff work together to grow and enhance the culture of wellbeing and learning of our college. You will work alongside our Head of Wellbeing Services, Mental Health Practitioner and Counsellor. Generally, all working hours are conducted within the school terms and you will not be required to work in the school holidays unless negotiated with the Principal Team in the case of a specific need. 

 

Education Support Range 3 is distinguished by the introduction of management responsibility and accountability for the delivery of professional support services. The role will usually impact beyond the work area or professional field, such as capability building for teachers around mental health and wellbeing of students. It seeks to gain cooperation of other staff members or members of the school community to achieve specific objectives, such as in school administration, operations or educational programs.

Direction on targets and goals is provided but the position will have some degree of latitude in determining how they are achieved. This latitude will generally be limited by standard procedures and school policy. Deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require some guidance and direction from senior management. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement evidence-based intervention strategies for students with complex needs relating to engagement and attendance, including collaborating with families, external professionals, and agencies when appropriate, whilst managing the associated risks. 
  • Undertake individual and/or small group therapeutic interventions with students to assist them in enhancing their capacity to self-manage their social, emotional and educational needs.
  • Collaborate with Student Wellbeing team, Leading Teachers- House Leaders and Attendance officers in accordance with existing processes and procedures for responding to long term absences, school refusal and disengagement from education. 
  • Provide information, feedback and advice to the Leading Teachers- House Leaders regarding individual student’s needs, issues and concerns that will assist engagement in their learning programs. 
  • Maintain appropriate confidential records and provide written and oral reports in accordance with DET and school policies. 
  • Provide professional learning and consultation to others, such as teachers and other school wellbeing staff, to build the capacity of the college to improve students’ wellbeing, learning and developmental outcomes. 
  • Liaise with other Department areas (including Secondary School Nurses, Student Support Service officers and Disability Inclusion staff) and external service providers with a view to optimising service access for at risk students and where relevant their families. 
  • Maintain professional standards and continued professional learning, including attending professional development activities throughout the year. 
  • Meet relevant policies and legislative requirements in relation to student health information and privacy. 
  • Other duties consistent with qualifications and experience as required by the Principal.

 

Who May Apply

It is a requirement that applicants hold qualifications as a Social Work to be eligible for accreditation within their relevant professional body, the Australian Association of Social Workers. Ideally, we are seeking a Social Worker however would consider other allied health professionals with relevant qualifications, experience and appropriate registration. Applicants will need, at minimum, to hold a Bachelor qualification in Social Work, Psychology, or similar Allied Health qualification.

 

Required

  • Applicants must be qualified as a psychologist, social worker, mental health nurse or occupational therapist. Specifically:
  • For Psychologists, applicants must hold full registration with AHPRA
  • For Mental Health Nurses, applicants must hold full registration with AHPRA and hold a postgraduate qualification in mental health
  • For Social Workers, applicants must be eligible for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers
  • For Occupational Therapists applicants must hold full registration with AHPRA
  • Demonstrated direct counselling experience
  • A current Working With Children Check.

Desirable

  • For Psychology applicants, specialisation in educational and/or developmental psychology.
  • For Mental Health Nurse applicants, holding a Mental Health Nurse Credential and membership with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses.
  • For Social Work applicants, membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers and an Accredited Social Worker Trade Mark.
  • For Occupational Therapy applicants, a Better Access to Mental Health Endorsement.
