Aboriginal Sexual Assault Counsellor

Taree Sexual Assault Service is seeking to employ a suitable applicant to provide Sexual Assault counselling for individuals, families and groups who have had a recent or past sexual assault. The suitable applicant will also liaise between the Sexual Assault service and the local Aboriginal Community to help ensure we are meeting the needs of Aboriginal clients and that we are providing culturally sensitive care at all times.

The Aboriginal Sexual Assault counsellor is responsible for providing counselling, individual and group work to victims of sexual assault and collaborating with non-Aboriginal service providers to build the cultural competency of our service responses to sexual assault. The suitable applicant will also be responsible for assisting our service to partner with the local Aboriginal community, build relationships, and provide education on sexual violence, domestic violence and child protection.

The Aboriginal Sexual Assault counsellor plays a pivotal role within the Sexual Assault service in facilitating the delivery of culturally appropriate services that meet the needs of Aboriginal clients. The Aboriginal Sexual Assault Counsellor in this role will act as a cultural advisor and key link between our service and local Aboriginal Communities to enable two-way understanding to ensure both the cultural, support and counselling needs of Aboriginal clients as well as community, are met.

The Aboriginal Sexual Assault counsellor will work closely with non-aboriginal sexual assault counsellors in the Sexual Assault team as well as members of the broader Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Women’s Services team which include Child protection counsellors, Joint Child Protection Response Health Clinician and Women’s Health nurses. This is a supportive and welcoming team where we value openness and working together. As part of the team you will be supported with access to individual supervision, peer supervision, team building sessions and the broader Aboriginal Violence, Abuse Neglect (VAN) Services network. You will also work alongside a number of Aboriginal Health Workers, Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officers and Aboriginal Mental Health trainee’s working in Taree and Forster Health services. 

You will partner with Aboriginal Medical Services in Taree and Forster including Biripi AMS and Tobwabba AMS.

The position is based at Taree Community Health Centre which is part of the Lower Mid North Coast (LMNC) Sector and is located next to the Manning Base Hospital. This is Biripi Country. At times you also might be required to travel to Forster or Gloucester Community Health centres which are also part of our LMNC sector. In Forster and Gloucester you will be working on Worimi Country.
