About the Business Unit

Adoption Services is part of the Police, Fines and Crime Prevention Group of the Department of Justice and Community Safety. The Adoption Services team is aligned with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) and reports to the Registrar (BDM) and Director, Adoption Services.

Adoption Services delivers a range of services under the Adoption Act 1984 including counselling to people considering placing a child for adoption, assessing people to be approved to adopt a child from Victoria or overseas and providing records to people who have been affected by past adoptions.

About the Role

An Advanced Case Manager within Adoption Services may be responsible for any or all the following: providing counselling, assessing families, writing reports for court, liaising with agencies including those that are overseas, supervising and supporting placement, preparing records for release, searching for family and providing an intermediary between people separated by adoption.

Some of your duties may include:

  • Assist parents considering placing a child for adoption
  • Assess families seeking to adopt a child
  • Oversee the arrangements for children placed for adoption
  • Support people seeking adoption information and records

About You

As our ideal candidate, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and expertise relevant to the area of adoption, including experience undertaking complex casework and assessments.
  • Experience managing complex issues relating to the placement of children in alternative home care and associated legislation including the Adoption Act 1984.
  • Experience in effectively utilising theory, knowledge and informed judgement in the application of a range of assessment, evaluation and intervention techniques and strategies that would be applicable to adoption.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • A recognised Social Work degree or a similar welfare or behavioural related degree which includes:
    – a primary focus on child development, human behaviour, family dynamics and/or impacts of trauma; and preferably;
    – a practical component such as counselling or case work practice.
