About the role:
Multicultural Australia is currently offering an opportunity for Bicultural Support Workers to work as part of our Humanitarian Settlement Program team. The role is full-time, fixed term for 6 months and is Brisbane based. The role will require travel across Brisbane, Logan, Gold Coast & Ipswich Areas.
The primary purpose of this team is to provide welcome, safety and security to clients under the program, while ensuring they are linked with essential services and appropriate housing options to ensure a smooth transition to life in Australia. Among other duties, the successful candidate will:
- Assist Case Managers to complete initial case assessments and case reviews by providing language support and cultural advice and attending outreach appointments with clients;
- With direction from the Settlement Teams, conduct settlement services including airport reception, local area orientation, assistance to attend medical appointments, assistance in navigating the rental market, ensuring clients are supported to arrange appropriate appointments and access information in order to develop their Lifeskills capacity;
- Work outside normal hours to attend airport reception and provide on-arrival support to clients;
- Cross collaboration with other program areas such as the Employment, Accommodation, Lifeskills, and Community Development teams in order to gain the best settlement outcomes for clients;
- Assist clients to access a range of services, information and programs delivered by external agencies and sources;
- Provide emotional support and social inclusion assistance to clients as part of day to day interaction;
What qualifications and skills do I need?
You will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and have effective communication and interpersonal skills. As well as having a confident and positive personality, you will possess:
- Proficient language skills (reading, writing and speaking), in both English and:
- Dari, Harazagi and/or Pashto, preferably from Afghani cultural and community background; or
- Arabic speaking BCW preferably from Syria or Iraq cultural and community background;
- Sound and accurate knowledge and understanding of Australian culture and systems which are relevant to client settlement, along with the ability to explain information about important life skills so that clients are able to independently establish their lives in Australia;
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to work cross culturally, assisting clients to develop connections with people from their culture of origin, along with other meaningful social connections,
- Demonstrated ability to provide appropriate cultural advice to both clients and staff of Multicultural Australia;
- Demonstrated commitment to working with all members of the community, irrespective of cultural and religious affiliations and a commitment to social justice and human rights;
- Ability to work outside normal hours and willingness to apply for an Aviation Security Identification Card;
Successful candidate will be required to have a valid driver’s licence, police check and apply for a Working with Children Blue Card. It is a condition of employment with Multicultural Australia to fulfil all our current and future COVID-19 vaccination requirements.
