The role

The Alcohol and Other Drugs Outreach and Aftercare Worker will provide practical assistance and support to client exiting from Alcohol and Other Drugs inpatient and rehabilitation units and/or Correctional facilities. 

This role offers a quality service and a proactive, collaborative approach to the achievement of identified goals for those participating in the service. The worker will have a primary role in providing case management, developing, and monitoring individual support plans. These plans will include building family and community linkages and assistance with achieving vocational and educational outcomes. The position will promote, encourage, facilitate, and support effective information provision and referral to recovery activities which support and/or assist clients to maintain their wellbeing. 

The worker will be part of a close-knit team that provides a range of different post care supports and services for clients preparing to leave residential or day rehabilitation programs and correctional centres. The position will assist to secure suitable accommodation and employment, education, or training opportunities. The other major focus of the role is around addressing potential social isolation. 

This position will work closely with other staff (including volunteers) who offer Transitional Supported Accommodation, Chaplaincy support and Work Development Order services. 

The Essentials

  1. Drug & Alcohol, Community Services, Criminology, Psychology, or similar qualifications or demonstrated experience and knowledge working with people from Corrections, Alcohol and Drug or Family and Community Services. 
  2. Demonstrated ability to engage and work with people and families who are caught up in the criminal justice or AOD system.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of Case Management principles. 
  4. An understanding of the issues pertaining to the overrepresentation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice and AOD recovery systems
  5. A commitment to the Samaritans values of Compassion, Integrity, and Justice
  6. A commitment to the principles and practice of cultural competence. 
  7. The ability to work both individually and as part of a team. 
  8. Well-developed IT skills with a demonstrated ability to work across several different data bases, computer programs and data entry portals.
  9. Demonstrated above average written and verbal communication skills. 

All Samaritans employees require proof of current COVID -19 vaccinations, Drivers Licence, NDIS Worker Screening Check, WWCC, undergo a functional assessment & hold current First Aid Certificate.
