Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service Inc. (CRDVS) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to using its specialist knowledge and skills to prevent domestic and family violence in the community and to empower those affected by it. Established in 1987, CRDVS has grown from a small team to become one of the first four Regional Domestic Violence Services to receive funding from the Queensland government in 1992. Led by a Board and with 25 staff, the organisation provides a free, confidential and highly professional service for family members who are currently or who have experienced, domestic and family violence. CRDVS is a child safe organisation and all children who come into contact with their services will be provided with a welcoming and safe service. The service is staffed by a close-knit team of qualified professionals. Qualifications & experience
- The ideal candidate will have appropriate tertiary qualifications in the social or behavioural sciences (e.g. Psychology, Social Work, Art Therapy, Counselling) or a related discipline.
- Experience in providing counselling interventions and support specifically to children and young people.
- You will have knowledge, analysis and understanding of domestic and family violence and its effects on women, children and adolescents, as well as other issues affecting child welfare such as child abuse and neglect.
- You will have an understanding of developmental stages for children, adolescents and families, and the ability to articulate a number of theoretical frameworks from different counselling models, including trauma-informed practice.
- CRDVS requires a resilient applicant with good coping mechanisms, initiative and creative energy. You must have interpersonal and team building skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, families, government and non-government agencies and the general public.
- Also required are computer literacy skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
- Please Note: All applicants must hold (or obtain) a current C Class driver’s licence, a Working With Children Card and a formal police criminal history check.
Tasks & responsibilities
- Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service Inc. (CRDVS) has a rewarding opportunity for a part-time (0.7) Child & Youth Worker to join their team based in Atherton.
- In this role you will be primarily responsible for performing a range of interventions with children and young people who have experienced domestic and/or family violence in order to reduce the impact and trauma of domestic and family violence on them.
- More specifically, your duties will include: Developing and providing appropriate, face to face counselling, group work and crisis support for children and young people who have been affected by domestic violence;
- Working flexibly with a variety of modalities, including Trauma Informed Practice, appropriate to counselling children and young people who have experienced or witnessed domestic and/or family violence as their individual needs and learning styles dictate;
- Providing information and support to carers of child witnesses of domestic and/or family violence, individually and in group settings;
- Developing and maintaining professional training materials and client resources;
- Providing phone and face to face crisis support, advocacy, information and referral to people experiencing domestic and family violence;
- Preparing and maintaining confidential records of client work including case management plans; and
- Enhancing greater community awareness of domestic and family violence and the effects it has on children and young people by participating in community education.
