This position has responsibility to provide therapeutic counselling and advocacy to children, young people, and their families when physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect and / or domestic violence has occurred within the family. The role of the CPCS clinician is specialised and complex, with the focus of intervention being to maintain the child or young person in their family where possible with the intention to prevent recurrence of abuse, as well as to prevent placement breakdown, and assist families to address the impacts and effects of the abuse and neglect. This position also provides a Violence Abuse and Neglect (VANS) response, focused on providing counselling to children and families who have experienced trauma and identified risks and safety concerns, and may provide domestic violence and sexual assault counselling.

Counselling will be the core task of the position, however co-ordination of health service delivery to the child and advocacy for client interests within the child protection response will also be significant responsibilities. This position works very closely with Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) and with other service providers, including Health providers. CPCS clinicians also provide consultation, support and education and training for health workers on child protection issues and concerns.
