headspace is Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year old’s.  The service is designed to make it as easy as possible for a young person and their family to get the help they need for problems affecting their wellbeing. Youturn is a not-for-profit organisation that started in 1989 to help address youth homelessness in Noosa.  Since then, the organisation and grown and evolved, and now provides health and social services to over 6,000 young people and their families annually, to assist them in achieving their full potential.

Youturn is the lead agency of five headspace centres across Southern Queensland that focus on early intervention for young people through a range of services.

The opportunity

As the Clinical Lead you will provide clinical leadership and oversight for the headspace centre. This includes the provision of complex clinical case service delivery, professional leadership of the Access and Intake team, and supervision. 

You will also effectively engage, screen, assess, refer and provide brief interventions and coordinate care for a small caseload of young people aged 12-25 years who are clients of headspace.

Some of your other key responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing the referral processes in and out of headspace
  • Assisting in the collection and reporting of statistical information 
  • Assisting in the creation of an environment that promotes excellence in integrated youth health and support with a focus on youth participation, access, and family-focused care.
  • Providing secondary mental health consultations and advice 
  • Assisting the Centre Manager to monitor high risk young people and ensuring that appropriate assessment, management and follow up support/referral is provided.
  • Presenting clinical information on behalf of headspace.
  • Relating to young people in a manner which is relevant and appropriate to their developmental and cognitive level of functioning and provide services in a youth friendly manner.
  • Conducting risk assessments including assessment of suicide risk and violence.

 

Experience, Qualifications & Other Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or Nursing.
  • Hold full registration with AHPRA as a Psychologist, Nurse or Occupational Therapist (with mental health endorsement) or membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW)
  • High level knowledge and understanding of youth mental health, evidence-based interventions and clinical practice, as well as demonstrated excellence in the practical application of such, in the areas of youth mental health and alcohol and drug use.
  • Knowledge and understanding of local youth mental health stakeholders and key relationships in these sectors (Desirable) 

 

Other Requirements

  • Current ‘C’ class Open drivers’ licence
  • Blue Card issued by Queensland Government, if applicable. 
  • Youturn requires all its workplace participants to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with an approved COVID-19 vaccine, according to up-to-date health advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) or a State or Federal Government; or provide a valid exemption certificate.

 

Selection Criteria

  • Knowledge and understanding of mental health, evidence-based interventions and clinical practice as well as demonstrated excellence in the practical application of such, in the areas of youth mental health and alcohol and drug use. 
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake initial screening activities and a comprehensive bio-psychosocial assessment to determine a young person’s clinical care needs and provide appropriate follow up support.
  • Experience in the delivery of brief therapeutic interventions, counselling services and treatment planning for young people and their families/carers/kin. 
  • Highly developed communication (including written) and interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with young people, advocate on their behalf and establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, young people, families/carers/kin and stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated ability to apply risk management strategies within a clinical context.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of clinicians and provide adequate supervision.
