Our Environment

St Virgil’s College is a Kindergarten, Prep, Grade 3 to Year 10 school for boys, founded in 1911 and conducted by Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA). 

The St Virgil’s Junior School (Kindergarten, Prep, Grade 3 to 6) is located in Patrick Street, Hobart, adjacent to St Mary’s Cathedral.  The secondary campus (Year 7 to 10) is situated on an expansive property at Austins Ferry. 

The College commenced Kindergarten in 2021 and Prep in 2022 and will become a K-12 College by 2024. During this exciting time of growth and development, the College is seeking experienced and motivated staff to work as part of a team to support the expansion of current operations. 

All roles within the College are informed by the mission of a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition. 

The Job

The College Counsellor role is a 12 month contract  and will provide counselling advice and support to the  students, families and staff as required across the Junior and Senior Schools of the College. 

The College Counsellor will work with the counselling team and to the development of wellbeing programs at the College. 

The College Counsellor will need to exhibit a personal commitment to the mission and vision of St Virgil’s College and work within the confines of Commonwealth Privacy legislation.

Key Selection Criteria 

The Key Selection Criteria that will be used to select the successful applicant include:

  1. Demonstrated understanding and respect for the Catholic educational philosophy of St Virgil’s College
  2. Proven experience in counselling, particularly in an educational setting, and in dealing with a range of problems pertinent to students, particularly boys
  3.  Proven experience with a range of counselling styles, eg crisis counselling, individual and group counselling, large group presentations, cross-cultural counselling and occupational counselling/mediation
  4. Competency in psychological/counselling intervention, using recognised, evidence-based approaches
  5.  Competency in Mindfulness
  6. Understanding and demonstrated commitment to the Catholic and EREA philosophy and ethos of education

  • Friendly, positive manner and disposition.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Flexible and adaptable,
  • Able to work effectively and efficiently under pressure;
  • Understanding of the ethos of a Catholic school

Our Expectations

St Virgil’s College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children therefore successful applicants must be willing to undergo and complete child protection screening and onboarding.
