Youth Focus is a for-purpose organisation that creates brighter futures for young people in Western Australia by offering a range of no-cost mental health services. Established in 1994, Youth Focus delivers innovative and accessible mental health services and programs across Western Australia to help at-risk young people aged 12 to 25. 

A key component of this is our role as the lead agency for a number of headspace centres, including the dynamic and successful satellite headspace Northam located on Ballardong Noongar Country.

  • NEW Community Outreach Position
  • Part-time role (Tuesday to Thursday)
  • Fixed-term contract until June 2026, in line with funding contract
  • DIDO with local accommodation provided
  • Salary: $86-95K PA, pro rata + super + salary packaging (dependent on experience)

About the Role

Based from our headspace Northam Centre and working across the Wheatbelt region, this position is responsible for increasing the efficiency of mental health and suicide prevention services by integrating services and improving access for young people, and their families.

Key duties of this role include:

  • Respond promptly and appropriately to support young people at risk of suicide and respond appropriately to stakeholders seeking information and support.
  • Conduct initial assessment of referrals to determine appropriate care pathways, severity of risk, and complexity of need.
  • Advocate for the social and emotional wellbeing needs of young people, minimising cultural and other barriers to accessing our services.
  • Provide culturally safe, trauma-informed, and appropriate support to young people and their families within the headspace Centre, through telehealth, in the community, or primary care settings, in both individual and group settings.
  • Liaise with Emergency Departments, Community Mental Health Services, General Practitioners, and other appropriate community-based support services to promote a consistent and coordinated service delivery response for young people and their families.
  • Strengthen family capacity to support Individuals at risk of suicide, including psychoeducation and safety planning.
  • Participate in regular clinical case review meetings and multi-disciplinary team meetings to ensure appropriate clinical service pathway and service delivery, and appropriate integration with the centre’s model of care.

About You

To be considered for this position, applicants will have: 

  • Tertiary qualifications (bachelor’s or higher) in psychology, social work, occupational therapy, counselling, or mental health nursing.
  • Current membership or registration with an appropriate professional body.
  • Minimum three years’ experience working with youth in complex psychosocial environments and delivering trauma informed care practice.
  • Demonstrated experience working in both a clinical and outreach/co-location capacity.
  • Extensive experience providing services that are culturally secure and family inclusive.
  • Experience and competence working with vulnerable groups, including those who identify as LGBTQIA+, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and CaLD.
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience in carrying out detailed psychosocial and suicide risk assessments.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with capacity to liaise appropriately with varying audiences.
  • ‘C’ class Driver’s Licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Flexibility to work one late shift a week, and outside of normal business hours as required.
