An exciting opportunity exists for people with a lived experience of mental health issues and recovery, with a strong interest in and commitment to recovery, peer work and trauma informed care service delivery, to join the NSLHD Older People’s Mental Health Consumer Peer Worker team.

Where you’ll be working
The position is currently based at the Riverglen OPMHS Acute Inpatient Unit at Greenwich Hospital but applicants may be required to work at various sites across the NSLHD area.

 

What you’ll be doing

Each person’s unique journey of recovery will be supported by mental health drug and alcohol services in a way that fosters hope, purpose and resilience.

MHDA Statement of Intention

The intention of the NSLHD MHDA is to provide recovery-oriented, trauma informed services that are guided by evidence based practices and collaboration.

The OPMHS Consumer Peer Worker will draw upon their lived experience of mental health challenges and their personal recovery journey in a safe and effective way, to develop empathic relationships and support personal recovery of consumers accessing OPMH services and will work in collaboration with the OPMHS multidisciplinary team to engage older consumers and their carers in individual and group peer support processes and activities that are person centred and recovery focused. The OPMHS Consumer Peer Worker will participate in service planning and delivery meetings, clinical review and attend and contribute to clinical handover. This is a non-clinical role.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them
  2. Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or willingness and commitment to obtain. Past or current personal experience of using Mental Health and/or Drug & Alcohol related services.
  3. Demonstrated clear written and verbal communication and negotiation skills including information technology skills.
  4. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and actively contribute to clinical care planning processes in a team setting.
  5. Able and willing to share aspects of your personal treatment and recovery experience with others, individually and/or in groups, in a safe and effective way.
  6. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with a range of key stakeholders including, consumers, carers, GPs, non-government organisations, and inpatient and community mental health teams.
  7. Understanding of and commitment to consumer-led mental health recovery principles.
  8. NSW Drivers Licence.
