JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking people with experience in providing culturally appropriate counselling for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and their families, who have experienced sexual assault to work in our Nguru program.

The Service:

CRCC is a non-government, feminist organisation working collaboratively within service provision systems in the ACT and surrounding areas to provide services and programs to eliminate sexual violence against women, young people, children, and men.

We provide a crisis counselling line, community support, counselling to victims and their families, and community education programs.

The Program:

The Nguru Program provides culturally appropriate counselling for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members, who have experienced sexual assault, and for their families. Nguru aims to help service users assess their circumstances and relationships and make choices, decisions, and plans for the future. The Nguru program’s approach is holistic, and family centred. Assistance is provided through discussions with professional counsellors in individual and group sessions (where appropriate).

The program also provides education and training to community members, other non-government members, government agencies, service providers and schools about the causes, effects, and responses to sexual violence against women and children in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

The Role:

The focus of the Coordinator positions will be providing, coordinating, and promoting services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in support of the work of the Canberra Rape Crisis support services.

We are seeking people with experience in providing culturally appropriate counselling for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and their families, who have experienced sexual assault to work in our Nguru program.

Requirements and conditions for applicants:

  • well-developed understanding of the causes and consequences of sexual violence
  • demonstrated previous experience in providing support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and knowledge of available referral pathways
  • understanding of community development and capacity-building concepts and strategies, previous experience developing and delivering community education sessions to a diverse range of groups and individuals
  • working knowledge and understanding of cultural issues; family and community dynamics and relationships; and complexities as well as the political sensitivities of indigenous communities within the A.C.T
  • This is a designated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander position under section 42 (2) of the A.C.T Discrimination Act 1991.
  • The Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act of 2011 legislation requires that the preferred applicant must hold a current and valid Working with Vulnerable People card as proof of suitable employment screening and background checks.
  • A current driver’s licence
  • Tertiary qualification or equivalent demonstrated work experience with accompanying professional development training

 Skills required include:

  • Training and experience in the health or community sectors
  • Experience in community engagement and networking
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
