Since our establishment in 1936, Cancer Council Victoria has developed an international reputation for our innovative work in cancer research, prevention and support. As an independent, not-for-profit organisation, we play a leading role in reducing the impact of all cancers on all people. 

Our Cancer Council 13 11 20 Information and Support line is staffed by experienced cancer nurses and is the gateway to the broader support services and programs offered by Cancer Council Victoria. Sitting within our Strategy and Support Division, this team provides information, practical and emotional support to people affected by cancer, and works closely with likeminded cancer support organisations.  The Service supports people impacted by cancer, their family and friends at any stage of their cancer experience and acts as a complement to their clinical care. 

About your opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Counsellor to join our dynamic and supportive team, where you will:

• Utilise your counselling experience to provide telephone-based psycho-social support interventions for people affected by cancer presenting with low-to-moderate, transient, or issue-specific distress.
• Provide referral to further or ongoing support as required, including onward referral to psychological counselling offered via our partnership with Cancer Council Queensland, internal supportive care services and/or supports offered by external health services and agencies. 
• The Counsellor will link with and provide training, support and input to the broader Cancer Information and Support Services team when required, as part of a multi-skilled team.

All about you

We are looking for an AHPRA registered nurse or Allied health practitioner (eg Social worker) with a minimum of 3 years’ experience, post graduate year, preferably in oncology or palliative care. Nurses with post graduate qualification in Mental Health with a minimum of 3 years’ experience may also be considered. Applicants should also have:

• Post graduate qualification in Counselling, at minimum Diploma level 
• Registration with a governing body (Australian Counselling Association or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia). 
• Demonstrated understanding of the psychological and physical impact of cancer on individuals and families and knowledge of how this may impact decision making.
• Experience in the delivery of telephone and/or face-to-face patient counselling interventions, including use of behavioural and cognitive coping strategies, decisional, and emotional support across the cancer experience – from adjustment to diagnosis through to grief and bereavement support.
• Advanced communication, interpersonal skills and active listening skills, including the ability to develop and maintain working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Computer literate, with skills in Internet, email and MS Office suite use and data-base management experience.
