About Mawarnkarra Health Service (MHS)

Mawarnkarra (MHS) is the largest primary health care provider providing direct services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in the Roebourne area. MHS provides the families of Roebourne with a fully functional and accredited Clinic that treats approximately 3,000 people per year.

Delivering quality medical services to improve the physical, spiritual, cultural, social and emotional wellbeing for families. MHS aspires to be a strong, sustainable and recognised health service that builds healthier communities and positive change for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and those who call Roebourne home.

We have a full time permanent position on offer with a competitive salary, amazing conditions and a fantastic outdoors lifestyle. We are situated just an hour’s drive from Millstream National Park, with swimming holes and rock art to explore. There are islands to explore just a stones throw from Point Samson or Dampier and some amazing beaches to be found at Murujuga National Park. 

The Position

The role of the Counsellor (Male) is ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people enjoy similar levels of physical, social and emotional wellbeing as enjoyed by other Australians.  The program aims to strengthen social and emotional wellbeing wherever possible by providing counselling and/or other supports for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  The program will support strong, healthy and resilient individuals, families and communities which in turn may enhance pathways to education and employment and reduce substance abuse, violence and contact with the criminal justice system.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Motivation to provide service excellence.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Good oral and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Ability to problem solve effectively on a day to day basis and in a crisis situation. 
  • Ability to negotiate complex issues with clients.
  • Ability to identify situations where a more senior staff member is required for assistance.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and demonstrated organisational skills.
  • Ability to liaise and develop relationships within the Aboriginal community of the area.
  • Commitment to ongoing participation in education, professional development, evidence based research and quality assurance.

The skills required include:

  • Relevant qualifications in counselling
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a similar role
  • High level oral and written communication skills, including the ability to relate well to staff and to liaise effectively with key stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of cultural factors and social determinants particularly relating to Aboriginal Health;
  • Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality and a high level of accuracy;
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills and the ability to effectively determine priorities to ensure deadlines are met;
  • Work effectively as a member of a team in an environment of competing priorities;

You will require:

  • A valid current driver’s license “C” class is a requirement of this position.
  • Current Police Certificate and Working with Children’s check or the ability to obtain;
  • Current First Aid and/or CPR Certificate or ability to obtain.
  • COVID-19 Vaccinated

All employees are subject to regular and random drug and alcohol testing.

Benefits include:

  • Base rate $75,000 pa
  • 37.5 Hour working week, Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.45pm
  • 11% Superannuation
  • $13,000 Housing Allowance pro rata
  • $1,000 Electricity Allowance (Oct-Feb)
  • $3,055 (single) District Allowance
