Centacare North Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation that provides counselling, family support, mediation, family dispute resolution, disability services, education and courses, crisis housing and homelessness support, youth services, community engagement and NDIS services. Centacare services the North Queensland community from offices in Townsville, Ayr, Bowen, Mt Isa, Cloncurry, Longreach and Normanton.
The Counselling and Intervention (ROSA) services are provided to children and young people under 18 years who are subject to statutory intervention and require support as a therapeutic response arising from a personal experience of physical, emotional or sexual abuse/harm and neglect. Counselling support is a targeted therapeutic response involving skilled and qualified practitioners listening attentively and patiently to the express feeling and circumstances of the child (and carer), perceiving difficulties from a child’s point of view, helping the child to see things differently and facilitating choice and positive change in the child’s life, conducted within a private and safe setting.

Joining a values-driven, supportive and inclusive team, you will:
- Build rapport with the child and care team whilst maintaining professional boundaries; work effectively with the care team and offer strategies and support as appropriate that meets the child’s care needs and supports management of challenging/complex behaviours.
- Assess the child’s therapeutic needs utilising the Outcomes Star assessment tool then develop an individualised therapy plan that is informed by consulting Child Safety, the Child, School, Carer/parent and through counsellor’s observations.
- Provide consistent, evidenced based, best practice models of counselling to meet the therapy goals.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Possession of a relevant degree in Social Work, Psychology or Behavioural Sciences and eligibility for membership of a relevant professional association.
- A developed understanding of disrupted attachment, trauma and the impact that this can have on a child’s behaviour and wellbeing. Knowledge of an array of therapeutic and creative strategies to engage children during counselling sessions.
- Highly developed communication skills both written and verbal for working with a broad-based network of service providers and a culturally diverse clientele.
