About the role
This position will provide counselling to students of UNE and make an effective contribution to the Student Experience Division through the provision of programs, online services and support to the full student body. The counselling team has a strong focus on the development and delivery of support which increases student engagement, participation and ultimate success. The position reports to the Head, Student Wellness Centre and operates under their broad direction.
About you
- Provide counselling to students of UNE. Carry out assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning (including referral and case management) for psychosocial and academically-related concerns of presenting clients. Provide psychological assessment and reports on behalf of, and with permission of, clients when necessary.
- Plan and lead workshops and psychosocial programs, strategies and interventions, including online services, in response to identified needs in the student and University community. Also contribute to projects and/or undertake evaluation studies and relevant research as appropriate to the delivery of student counselling and other support services.
- Demonstrate innovative practice and planning skills to enable the delivery of relevant services to on-campus and off-campus students, and capacity to work closely with other support services within and outside the University.
- Work within appropriate professional, ethical and legal standards for the delivery of personal support services, including identifying professional development opportunities to continually upgrade and update skills, ensuring that the requirements of professional registration and membership are met.
- Report to the Head, Student Wellness Centre on counselling issues; particularly as they relate to the strategic plan of the University, and to at times deputise in his or her absence. This may involve acting team-leader responsibilities, co-supervision of psychology or social work interns within the Service, and assistance with staff selection, induction, training and peer consultation.
- Assist with crisis intervention and critical incident management assistance to the University community as required; including provision of high-level information and/ or advice in relation to management of risk re: student mental health and at-risk behaviour.
- Contribute to identifying, initiating, developing and implementing policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of counselling services and support of students.
- Maintain a broad awareness of significant issues of interest or trends within the tertiary education sector, government, industry and the community, and within UNE.
- Promote the services of the Counselling unit to UNE staff and students.
- Perform your mandatory reporting duties by reporting suspected cases of child abuse and neglect to government authorities in line with relevant legislative requirements/[or if role is in NSW: in line with section 27 of the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998 No 157 (NSW).
- Ensure knowledge of the Rules, Policies and Procedures of the University (available on the University website) is maintained and abide by them as they are amended, varied or replaced from time to time.
