13YARN is the first national Crisis Support and Suicide Prevention line designed, led and delivered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. 13YARN (13 92 76) offers a confidential, one-on-one yarning opportunity for mob with a Lifeline Australia trained and culturally safe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Crisis supporter 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Your part in our UnitingCare Community team
We are now seeking applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to be trained to become Crisis Supporters for the 13YARN service. Our training will be held Face2Face online, with shifts to be completed in one of ten crisis support centres; Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Mackay, Bundaberg, Maryborough, Maroochydore, Brisbane, Ipswich or Broadbeach.

This role is being offered to applicants seeking casual employment which will include being paid for the initial mandatory 10-week training commencing in September 2023 held on Monday and Thursday evenings 5pm-8:30pm AEST (4pm-7:30pm during day light saving)  which is delivered via Teams.

Upon the successful completion of this initial training and placement period, successful applicants will be offered when required shifts depending on availability and roster needs that may vary from 3-6 hours in duration between 12pm-12am Monday – Friday. Additional paid hours may be offered to complete supervision, on-going training, professional development and evaluation activities.

What you’ll need
• An ability to demonstrate good communication and listening skills
• An ability to show empathy and have a non-judgemental attitude
• Be willing to receive feedback and be reflective in your practice
• Have a genuine care for mob and authenticity in who you are
• Availability to attend zoom training Monday and Thursday 5pm-8:30pm AEST for a period of 8-10weeks prior to placement
• Be available for the hours between 12 noon and midnight, Monday to Friday
• Applicants must complete the nationally recognised Lifeline Telephone Crisis Supporter training program provided on behalf of Lifeline Australia RTO 88036
• Possesses a competent level of computer literacy??
• Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
• Be able to commence training in September 2023
