About us

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service Inc. (CRDVS) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to using its specialist knowledge and skills to prevent domestic and family violence in the community and to empower those affected by it. Established in 1987, CRDVS has grown from a small team to become one of the first four Regional Domestic Violence Services to receive funding from the Queensland government in 1992. Led by a Board and with 25 staff, the organisation provides a free, confidential and highly professional service for family members who are currently or who have experienced, domestic and family violence. 

CRDVS is a child safe organisation and all children who come into contact with their services will be provided with a welcoming and safe service. 

The service is staffed by a close-knit team of qualified professionals.

Qualifications & experience

 

  • The ideal candidate will have appropriate tertiary qualifications in the social or behavioural sciences (e.g. Psychology, Social Work, Art Therapy, Counselling) or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated skills in providing crisis counselling, risk assessment, case management, advocacy and crisis intervention.
  • You will have knowledge, analysis and understanding of domestic and family violence and its effects on women, children and adolescents, as well as other issues affecting child welfare such as child abuse and neglect.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge, of legislation impacting on situations of domestic and family violence.
  • CRDVS requires a resilient applicant with good coping mechanisms, initiative and creative energy. You must have interpersonal and team building skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, families, government and non-government agencies and the general public.
  • Also required are computer literacy skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Please Note: All applicants must hold (or obtain) a current C Class driver’s licence, a Working With Children Card and a formal police criminal history check.

 

 

 

Tasks & responsibilities

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (CRDVS) currently has a rewarding opportunity for a Domestic Violence Worker to join their team in Mossman on a full-time basis (38 hours per week / 76 hours per fortnight), performing outreach services to Port Douglas once per week.

Reporting to the Senior Practitioner, you will be primarily responsible for providing crisis intervention, crisis counselling and Domestic Violence Protection Order applications as required to ensure victims in crisis receive a timely service, and medium to long-term DV counselling to persons who are affected by domestic and family violence. 

More specifically, your duties will include:

  • Providing crisis assistance, crisis counselling, and assistance with protection order applications to victims of domestic violence, working under general supervision and within the guidelines of relevant legislation;
  • Assisting at Mossman Domestic Violence Court, providing information, referrals and general support to aggrieved and other CRDVS, court or police staff with court or protection order matters;
  • Providing community education, in collaboration with other agencies, working towards a concerted approach for the elimination of domestic and family violence within the region;
  • Preparing and maintaining appropriate, accurate and confidential records of client work, including case management plans and Redbourne referral outcomes;
  • Actively participating in regular case management meetings with other CRDVS team members; and
  • Attending Domestic Violence Court Team briefing meetings to provide information and general assistance to the Domestic Violence Worker (Court Support) in relation to CRDVS assisted protection order applications.
