Carbal Medical Services (Carbal) is a Not-For-Profit organisation that provides health services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in and around Toowoomba and Warwick. The core function of Carbal Medical Services is to provide medical services to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people through two medical practices and many community programs, along with being an NDIS service provider. Carbal covers the regions of Darling Downs and Southern Downs.
Position Overview
As the Alcohol and Drug Counsellor, you will be responsible for providing confidential counselling and support to individuals, families and community members who are experiencing difficulties with addiction. The position will also require you to promote healthy choices and healthy lifestyles through education.
Key duties include:
- Delivery of culturally appropriate alcohol and drug counselling in an individual, family or group format including Narrative Therapy, CBT and/or ACT.
- Provide support and appropriate referrals
- Educate individuals, stakeholders and community on the causes and affects of addiction to drugs and alcohol.
- Work closely with General Practitioners, Aboriginal Health Workers, and other health professionals to provide a holistic service for clients and families;
- Build and maintain respectful and meaningful community relationships
- Engage with health professionals and stakeholders to identify and respond to local need.
- Contribute to the maintenance of relevant data, records and statistics;
- Participate in quality improvement processes to improve patient and Centre outcomes;
- Comply with organisational as well as governmental reporting framework requirements as directed by the CEO on a regular basis including in relation to funding, and planning;

Requirements:
Essential
- Counselling, drug and alcohol, psychology or human services qualifications or experience in relevant fields
- Knowledge of the effects of alcohol and other drugs
- Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and the ability to function in a professional manner without direct daily supervision
- Understanding of case management practices in mental health, drug and alcohol or generalist setting
- Experience working with drug and alcohol withdrawal and rehabilitation services
Desirable
- Diploma in Drug and Alcohol counselling or equivalent
- This position would suit a person who has a lived experience of AOD and/or mental health issues.
- Indigenous background and/or experience working with Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander people.
- Eligible for a Medicare provider number
