Are you a dynamic, passionate Therapist with an interest in becoming a Family Counsellor? Or are you already a Family Counsellor but would like to be supported to gain further experience in this area?
Jacqueline McDiarmid at the Sydney Couple and Family Specialists is looking for an exceptional practitioner to join her team on an internship and contract basis.
Please apply by Friday 8th September 2023.
Family therapy is perhaps the most complex, fast-paced and exciting work of all psychotherapy clinical presentations. It takes skill, specialist knowledge, wisdom, confidence and the right personality to successfully manage the therapy process when working with families. Some Therapists have been trained in this field but don’t yet have the confidence to work with family clients. Other Therapists have some experience working with couples and perhaps families but would like the training and support to do more of it.
The Sydney Couple and Family Specialists is a busy and highly regarded private practice located in the Sydney CBD. All Therapists are trained in systemic therapy and work specifically with couples and families.
This unique opportunity will afford the Therapist intense and supportive supervision and training over a period of time. After successful completion of the internship, the Therapist will be offered a contract position at Sydney Couple and Family Specialists, allowing them to grow their practice whilst being supported in a professional environment.
This internship would suit you if you have been working with individuals and couples for a while and have had some exposure to family work and you would like to start your own private practice with the support of a group practice.
Location: Sydney CBD
Days: Three clinical days per week including one Saturday a fortnight when on a full contract. Whilst in the internship training phase you will be required on the other days for training and supervision.
Internship duration: Dependant on the level of experience of successful applicant – this will be determined at the interview.
Essential:
- Two plus years working clinically with couples.
- Three plus years working clinically with individuals.
- Systemic training – either through professional development or post graduate qualification.
- Ability to work on your own.
- Highly responsible and reliable
- Ability to maintain tight boundaries.
- Strong administration skills and highly organised.
Desirable (but not essential):
- Post graduate qualification in couple or family counselling (or both).
- Clinical experience working with families.
All interested applicants are encouraged to apply. Please submit a one-page cover letter addressing both the Essential and Desirable criteria with a paragraph about what appeals to you about this position plus your CV.

Applications close on Friday 8th September 2023.
