About the role

As Family Support Worker (Children’s Contact Service), you will work under general direction from the Coordinator (Children’s Contact Service) to facilitate and perform the activities and services of the Better Together Children’s Contact Centre, ensuring the centre achieves its primary goal of smooth contact visits between family members in a safe and secure environment. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will also be expected to make relevant connections between services and families, particularly through the Better Together referral system.

  • Supervise changeover visits and handovers, ensuring that the visit adheres to the family’s contact plan and observing Better Together safety procedures.
  • Conduct intake interviews and inductions for families, including parent interviews, safety procedures and introductory visits ensuring that families are provided with pertinent information and appropriate referrals that link to their goals.
  • Facilitate the smooth administrative running of the centre using Better Together databases and computer systems.

Better Together Community Support (formerly Community Services Tablelands), located in the scenic Atherton Tablelands about 1.5 hours away from Cairns, Queensland, is a not-for-profit organisation that delivers a variety of services to the people of the Atherton Tablelands. These range from counselling for families, young people and the elderly to home maintenance and modifications services as well as delivering relief services to the general community through our community hub.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Diploma or Certificate IV in either Counselling, Child, Youth and Family Intervention, Early Childhood Development and/or enrolment in a Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences.
  • Experience in early child development, child protection, interventions with parents or working in the community sector.
  • Queensland C-Class Driver License with no restrictions.
  • Current Working With Children Blue Card or ability to successfully apply.

Skills and experience

  • Demonstrated experience in working with families in stress or breakdown.
  • Ability to de-escalate situations and manage a complex range of behaviours
  • Be calm and collected in complex situations and able to risk assess during challenging behaviour.
  • Commitment to evidence-based therapies.

  • Warm and non-judgemental.
  • Agreeable disposition able to interact with a diverse range of clients.
  • Passionate about child protection and safety and able to relate to children.
