JOB DESCRIPTION

Support young women who are pregnant or parenting in 24/7 accommodation and outreach program. Based in Morphett Vale.

The Role

Coolock House provides 24 hour supported accommodation, outreach housing and an outreach program to young women up to 25 years of age who are pregnant and/or parenting and who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. 

The Family Support Worker provides practical support to young pregnant and/or parenting women and their children utilising a range of skills to assist young women to develop independent living skills and parenting skills, increase their mental health and well-being and support positive relationship/family dynamics. Young women are supported to have good attachment relationships with their children and workers are aware of the impact of homelessness and trauma on the health and development of children, in line with the Young Family Support Program service model and approved Case Management Guidelines.

Daily activities for the Family Support Worker includes:

  • The Family Support Worker will demonstrate practice based on trauma responsive care, life span development, attachment and a strength approach.
  • Implementation of case management tasks/responsibilities as directed by the Team Leader for the young families living on site.
  • Assistance with independent living skills including self-care, developing parenting skills and skills to maintain tenancy.
  • Ensuring tenancy requirements are met, including maintaining rent records and conducting rent records.
  • Support clients to build capacity, strengthen family, and establish community connections.

This position is funded on a fixed-term opportunity until 30 June 2024.

What you need to bring


     Essential

  • Cert IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention or equivalent
  • Knowledge of child development and child-parent attachment
  • Knowledge of the impacts of homelessness on young women and their children
  • An understanding of the impact of childhood trauma, attachment theory and adolescent development
  • Proficient in computer use and ability to learn and use databases
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team
  • Ability to take initiative and self-motivated
  • Must be willing and available to work evenings, weekends and overnights and have flexibility to work a 24/7 roster across all of the YFSP sites as required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have First Aid and CPR certificate
  • Valid Department of Human Services (DHS) Working with Children Check 
  • Valid Australian Drivers Licence

     Desirable

  • Experience in using H2H data collection system
  • Experience in a similar role
  • Experience working with young parents and/or young people
