Family Support Worker

Community Gro Inc. is seeking a passionate and innovative Family Support Worker for the Townsville Tertiary Family Intervention Service.  

The Tertiary Family Intervention Service is a pivotal component of Community Gro’s commitment to improving the health and development of families and children. The program has a child protection purpose and focuses primarily on the care and protection of vulnerable children and young people. The program works with families experiencing vulnerability to strengthen their capability, parenting skills, and resilience to prevent problems from developing or escalating to crisis point in order to avoid entry into the statutory system or when exiting from the statutory system.

The Family Support Worker role will be required to work occasional weekdays after hours and Saturdays. Travel to outreach locations will be necessary. 

  • Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award 2010 (SCHADS) Level 4.1

The tasks of the role include:

  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate engaging sessions that promote family bonding, child development, social interaction, physical activities, creativity, and healthy eating.
  • Participate in case planning and case plan reviews that are coordinated and facilitated by Child Safety Service Centres. 
  • Develop the practical skills of parents to care for their child, improve the safety of the family home environment and strengthen the attachment between parent and child/ren within a strengths-based and evidence-informed practice framework. 
  • Provide personalised support to families, identifying and addressing their unique needs and challenges, and fostering positive parenting practices.
  • Establish rapport with families, create a safe and welcoming environment, and encourage active participation in program activities.
  • Collaboratively identify the family challenges, strengths, and goals. 
  • Gather and enter clear and concise relevant data related to client program participation, outcomes, and impact in accordance with reporting requirements.

The essential skills and experience for the role are:

  1. Demonstrated successful experience in program delivery with a specific focus on family support and Child Safety intervention. 
  2. Well-developed verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and community groups, work successfully in a small team, and maintain broad professional networks.
  3. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office 365 programs, particularly Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
  5. Capacity to work in a highly functional team environment.

The desirable qualifications and skills for the role are:

  • Tertiary experience in a relevant field such as social work, community development, public health, education, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Must have a Working with Children (Blue Card).
  • Must have a ‘C’ class driver’s license.
