About the role
This is a court-based, case work position to service the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) in Sydney, Newcastle, Coffs Harbour and Lismore. You’ll support men impacted by family violence or who have allegations of family violence against them who are currently in the (FCFCOA) system. This position works across multiple (FCFCOA) locations to provide social, emotional and practical support to clients before, during and after court proceedings. 

The Family Advocacy and Support Service provides non-judgemental, drop-in or short term support to men with the social welfare needs while Legal Aid lawyers assist with legal support. You’ll conduct needs and risk assessments, refer to appropriate services and support clients as they navigate the legal system. You’ll conduct outreach activities with related services to build the profile of the service and attract warm referrals to the program.

This is a case work role that that will deliver services primarily in-person across various (FCFCOA) locations in NSW with occasional telehealth provision depending on court needs.

The details

  • This is an identified position. Being male is a genuine occupational requirement of this position under NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977
  • Full time contract to 30/6/25
  • Valid NSW Drivers Licence is essential as travel is required in this role
  • Approx $50 per hour + super + leave loading + salary packaging benefits 

What you’ll bring

  • Experience working with men impacted by domestic violence
  • Understanding of domestic and family violence, its gendered nature, and its disproportionate impact upon women and children
  • Understanding of how to safely work with men who use violence, in a way that avoids inadvertent collusion
  • Understanding of the intersections between domestic and family violence and the family law system
  • Ability to conduct risk assessments, identify short term needs to ensure client, child and family safety
  • Ability to effectively engage with clients in distress situations, other service providers, lawyers and court employees
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in advocacy and conflict resolution
  • Ability to work autonomously with limited supervision and as part of a team
