FAMILY WORKER (ABORIGINAL FAMILIES)

About the organisation

Junaya Family Development Services is a community organisation located in Blacktown and provides a range of services for families to assist in strengthening and building capacity. 

JFDS offers:

  • a Target Early Intervention (TEI) program providing information, advice, assessment and 12-week case management including home visiting.
  • a Learning Difficulties/Disability project for families who have children 0-18 years who experience a learning difficulty or disability and who live in the Blacktown LGA.
  • delivery of parenting programs and education/skills training to young people

About the job

This position provides case work services to Aboriginal children, young people and families in the local community as well as identify gaps in community services and unmet needs and be a support to staff in the organisation by providing information and learning opportunities on cultural competency.

This is a full-time position at 5 days per week, Salary for this role is classified at level 4 in the NSW SCHADS Award (Pay Point to be determined based on experience) plus superannuation. The role is based in Blacktown but covers the whole of the Blacktown LGA and some travel will be required, the successful applicant will need a current driver’s licence and a comprehensively insured vehicle.

There is a six-month probationary period.

What you’ll need to succeed

You will be a dynamic, proactive, and experienced professional with relevant tertiary qualifications as well as experience in all areas of case work , group work facilitation especially with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.   

Selection Criteria

  • Identify as an Australian Aboriginal, having been accepted as an Australian Aboriginal in the community in which you live 
  • Minimum qualification as Certificate IV/Diploma in Community Services/Case management, Degree in Social Sciences or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in case work working collaboratively with Aboriginal communities and the provision of services to Aboriginal children, young people and families
  • Sound knowledge of local Aboriginal communities and an understanding of issues facing Aboriginal families and communities 
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and have knowledge of Aboriginal kinship systems, and cultural issues and, be committed to a high level of service to the Aboriginal communities and share information/resources with JFDS staff
  • Ability to identify community needs and service gaps, advocate for clients and be responsive to client/staff feedback
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a strengths-based, person-centred framework
  • Ability to build good rapport with clients working in a sensitive and respectful manner
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, delivering, and evaluating group work activities 
  • Cultural competence and ability to work with diverse communities 
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to work in a team
  • Demonstrated experience in developing sustainable collaborative partnerships with other services
  • IT skills and experience working with client information electronically 
  • Ability to preserve, protect and maintain confidential information 
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding and working knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g., Keep Them Safe)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Own vehicle with comprehensive insurance
  • Knowledge of DEX Reporting System and Community Data Solutions (Client & Case Management)
