PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION
The position is responsible for providing a service user focused, strength based financial counselling service, which seeks to support, and stabilise the current financial difficulties experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals or families. This position will also assist in strengthening the capacity of individuals and families to improve their financial literacy and ability to manage their financial capabilities on a longer-term basis.
A financial counsellor can provide the following support to their clients:
- Advise and assist with problems related to debt and debt enforcement.
- Advocate and negotiate with banks and other lenders.
- Assist with concessions, grant eligibility and applications as well as referral for material aid.
- Assist with lodging complaints to external dispute resolution services.
- Refer to other community, health, and legal services.
- Provide information about consumer rights.
THE IDEAL PERSON FOR THIS ROLE
Essential
- A qualification in Financial Counselling.
- Eligibility for membership of Financial Counselling Victoria (FCVic) and meet the standards, training and supervision requirements set by FCVic.
- A practical understanding of relevant legislation.
- A current knowledge of the practices of financial institutions and of effective service delivery models and the ability to work within such frameworks.
- Ability to advise and provide financial information to families and individuals to assist in the resolution of financial issues at various levels including crisis intervention, intake and assessment and planned financial counselling in a culturally sensitive, safe manner.
- Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal, advanced written and oral communication skills.
- Knowledge of the impact and issues related to family violence, gambling harm and other co-morbidities and financial disadvantage suffered by Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders.
- Proficient in the use of MS Office, databases, and specialist financial planning software (noting the incumbent will be expected to recommend this).
- Current valid Victorian Driver’s Licence.

- Identify as Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander.
