Indigo Junction is a values driven not for profit organisation providing support to youth, families and individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

We are seeking an experience professional to provide Financial Counselling and financial literacy education and support to people most at risk of financial disadvantage and exclusion. Financial counselling and capability work aims to result in a client’s financial problems being partially or fully resolved; a client being able to make informed decisions on the best course of action to resolve their financial difficulties; and or a client gaining an improved ability to manage their financial affairs in the future. The Karnany FCCR Hub offers services that are specifically designed to be accessible and effective for those most vulnerable within our community. This will entail the provision of a flexible and accessible service to people who, for example, may be unable to read, may have never been employed, may not have access to phone or computers or be experiencing a level of disadvantage such that they cannot access mainstream services in generally expected ways. Karnany Aboriginal Centre and broader Indigo Junction services, provide the community a culturally safe support service for many Aboriginal families and families from low socio-economic backgrounds.

This position will deliver services primarily from the Karnany Aboriginal Centre FCCR Hub in Midland.

Objectives of this Position:

  • Demonstrated ability to engage in financial assessment and provide financial counselling.
  • Demonstrated capacity to advocate and negotiate on behalf of clients.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current financial Bankruptcy legislation and Credit code.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Maintain the Work development Permit scheme.
  • Provide triage support for service walk ins and internal referrals.
  • Provide thorough assessment processes that ensures that clients receive a prompt and efficient service.
  • Provide clients with a non-judgemental, empathetic service.
  • Use a case management approach with clients.
  • Work with clients to identify goals, options, strategies and actions.
  • Report on client outcomes and achievements.
  • Collect, enter and analyse data about clients to meet reporting requirements.
  • Develop and maintain professional and industry networks for promotion of the service and encourage referral.
  • Maintain professional boundaries.

Selection Criteria:

  • Diploma in Financial Counselling
  • Cert III in Community Services Work
  • Current 6 month National Police Clearance
  • Working With Children’s Check.
  • Current ‘C’ class driver’s license.
  • First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
  • 3 years appropriate experience; or demonstrated equivalent in a similar role.
  • Sound understanding of the principles of Trauma Informed Care.
  • Experience and demonstrated competence in working with people in crisis.
  • Understanding of the cultural and social factors of homelessness and other crisis.
  • Experience in a case management approach with an understanding of professional boundaries in relation to client work.
  • Knowledge of community and government resources.
  • Experience in referrals and community networking.
