Financial Counsellor – Northern Territory Lutheran Care

Our current programs include emergency relief, financial counselling, family support and education, foster care, housing and family shelter, community services, homelessness services, and refugee services.

Lutheran Care (LC) also provides a financial literacy program, emergency relief and financial counselling to Alice Springs, including town camps and remote communities within the Central Australian service area.

We currently have an exciting job opportunity for a full-time Financial Counsellor to provide high level and confidential financial counselling and education to clients, whilst building financial resilience for vulnerable people through information, education and promotion of our services. 

Whilst the position is based in our Alice Springs office, outreach services are a key aspect of our Financial Services Hub and therefore extensive travel, including some overnight stays are required. Driving a 4WD vehicle over large distances is a requirement of the role and therefore driver training will be provided. Relocation assistance, generous salary packaging, additional leave entitlements and access to professional development opportunities are available. 

The aims and objectives of this role are to:

  • Provide professional Financial Counselling to clients in need from Alice Springs, including town camps and remote communities within the Central Australia service area, through face to face and or other telecommunication platforms that are available 
  • Build financial resilience for vulnerable people through information, education and promotion of Lutheran Care services
  • Deliver activities and services as directed within the guidelines of applicable DSS funding requirements : including the National Debt Helpline Appointment Booking Project
  • With the guidance of the Senior Practitioner Financial Wellbeing, work collaboratively with all members of the Financial Capability and Counselling team in Alice Springs and two staff based in Adelaide to assist clients to overcome financial barriers.

Contracted position to 30 June 2024 at which time any further contracts will be subject to ongoing funding.

We offer a competitive remuneration plus salary packaging. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) allows Public Benevolent Institutions (PBI), such as Lutheran Care, to offer special tax concessions. Through salary packaging, these concessions allow employees to increase their take-home pay.

Required Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Abilities:

  • Diploma of Financial Counselling
  • Member or ability to obtain membership with the South Australian Financial Counsellors Association (SAFCA).
  • An understanding of Central Australian First Nations culture.
  • Ability to work with people from First Nations communities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel from time to time (dependent on budget ability) throughout Central Australia with some overnight stays possibly requested from time to time, in a range of accommodation.
  • Knowledge of the concepts of financial exclusion/inclusion, hardship, financial counselling services, relevant government policy and legislation.
  • Knowledge of financial counselling principles and practices including experience in the delivery of financial counselling services to clients.

The successful applicant will be required to undergo a NDIS Workers Screening Check, a DHS Working With Children Check, as well as a current Safe Environments for Children & Young People certificate. You must hold a current and unrestricted Northern Territory Driver’s License and possess a registered roadworthy vehicle available for work use (employees reimbursed for work travel). In addition, the successful applicant will be required to provide evidence of COVID-19 vaccination or a medical exemption.
