Centacare North Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation that provides counselling, family support, mediation, family dispute resolution, disability services, education and courses, crisis housing and homelessness support, youth services, community engagement and NDIS services. Centacare services the North Queensland community from offices in Townsville, Ayr, Bowen, Mt Isa, Cloncurry, Longreach and Normanton.

The Gambling Help Service (GHS) provides counselling, support, education, and referral services to individuals impacted by problem gambling. This includes the affected individual, their family and friends and the wider community. The Gambling Help Service also provides education to the community and gaming venues about the impact of problem gambling, how to identify problem gambling and where to seek help in the community. The Gambling Help Service covers the North Queensland region including Townsville, Palm Island, Magnetic Island, Ingham, Charters Towers, Burdekin, Northern Highlands, Mount Isa and Gulf Region.

Joining a values-driven, supportive and inclusive team, you will:

  • Provide counselling, utilising a variety of intervention methods and strategies that are responsive to the client’s needs and indicative of best practice for working with addiction. This will include your use of knowledge of the impact and issues relating to addiction, namely problematic gambling and associated behaviours.
  • To assess and formulate therapy plans and goals in working with individuals to achieve their goals.
  • Manage a client load in accordance with targets specified in funding and service agreements.
  • Liaise with community organisations and Gaming Venues to form highly effective connections in which to promote the Gambling Help Service and establish referral pathways to meet client needs.
  • Actively seeking out opportunities for the provision of information sessions within the community and other agencies.
  • Successful integration and maintenance of the Gambling Help Service in Indigenous Communities through consultation with community leaders, community engagement and the establishment of relationships and referral streams with existing services.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Possession of a relevant degree in Social Work, Psychology or Behavioural Sciences with current membership of the peak professional association.
  • Ability to work in a culturally sensitive manner with Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and CALD families.
  • Experience in delivering evidence-based therapeutic counselling intervention; with a focus on harm minimisation, prevention, and early intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement psycho-social and risk assessment skills during all stages of client contact whilst supporting concerns in the addiction and family and relationships space.
  • A current Driver Licence.
  • Currently hold, and/or eligibility to obtain and maintain, both a Disability Worker Screening and a Working with Children Blue Card.
