This is an exciting opportunity to develop and build our local expertise in the interpretation and clinical application of germline genomic information in paediatric patients with cancer, providing genetic counselling and education of clients, triaging of referrals, organisation of clinic, education of health professionals and the community, and promotion of the Children’s Cancer Research Unit and the Cancer Centre for Children at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. What you’ll be doing As part of its overall research strategy, the Luminesce Alliance-funded PPM3a project “Improved understanding of the role of genetic predisposition in childhood cancer through prospective analyses of NSW patients” will support Genetic Counsellor position at Westmead study sites. This genetic counsellor position is based within the Children’s Cancer Research Unit and the Cancer Centre for Children at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

What you’ll be doing

As part of its overall research strategy, the Luminesce Alliance-funded PPM3a project “Improved understanding of the role of genetic predisposition in childhood cancer through prospective analyses of NSW patients” will support Genetic Counsellor positions at Randwick and Westmead study sites. This genetic counsellor position is based within the Children’s Cancer Research Unit and the Cancer Centre for Children at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. 

BACKGROUND
Luminesce Alliance is a collaboration between the SCHN, the Children’s Medical Research Institute and the Children’s Cancer Institute. The goal of the Paediatric Precision Medicine Program (PPM) is to transform children’s health in NSW by bringing precision medicine to all children with cancer and rare genetic diseases.  
The PPM3 project “Improved understanding of the role of genetic predisposition in childhood cancer through prospective analyses of NSW patients” is one of 6 streams within the Paediatric Precision Medicine program and involves establishing a germline genetic screening program for all children with cancer in NSW at the time of their diagnosis. The aims of the project are to improve our understanding of the role of genetic predisposition in childhood cancer, identify new genomic variants and identify families who are at risk of developing cancer, with the ultimate goal to contribute to the prevention of cancer through access to appropriate management of risk, surveillance and treatment.

 

  1. ‘Board Eligible’ status with the Board of Censors for Genetic Counselling (Human Genetics Society of Australasia) and a commitment to work towards full certification in Genetic Counselling.
  2. Demonstrated significant genetic counselling experience, preferably in Cancer Genetics.
  3. Proven ability to work under minimal direct supervision where appropriate with utilization of independent professional judgement for routine tasks
  4. Experience in workplace and/or community education
  5. Demonstrated computer literacy with experience with MS Office, databases, presentation and pedigree drawing software.
  6. Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication.
  7. Demonstrated advanced reasoning skills with ability to problem solve, prioritise work and meet set deadlines
  8. Ability to interpret cancer terminology is desirable

Applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.

 

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate.

 

ASARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) 3 doses are required for Category A positions (refer to NSW Policy Directive PD2022_030 Occupational Assessment Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases).

 

ASARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) 3 doses are highly recommended for all other health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
