The Salvation Army Australia’s Family Violence Stream provides a wide range of services around the country to support women and women with children impacted by family and domestic violence. We offer refuge, children’s and parenting services, counselling, support, men’s programs, accommodation and advice to women and children who are experiencing, or who have experienced, family violence.

About the role

We are seeking a values-driven Housing Worker who will be instrumental in delivering high quality, safe and effective housing responses to those seeking support, safety, and recovery. The Family Violence Services works with service users from a feminist perspective, aiming to empower and increase the safety of women and children. Transition Support is a new initiative, to address the need for increased support for individuals and families accessing private rental. It is an outreach intervention for individuals and families that require additional practical support to establish and/or maintain secure housing.

The Housing Worker – Transition Support role includes working with individuals and families intensively to provide support to move through the crisis and refuge services to safe and secure accommodation. This role will be positioned within the Family Violence Programs. The primary location will be the FV office in Mackay and the Practitioner will be expected to visit the clients in the refuge premises and THMs regularly.

You will successfully

  • Effective relationships are established with clients that encourage self-determination and participation and uphold the principles of the National Family Violence Model of Care.
  • Expertise is utilised to develop and implement pathways into safe and secure housing.
  • Provide time-limited outreach intervention and case management to support clients to establish and maintain housing.
  • Support and coordinate with Specialist FV Practitioner to address issues which are impacting the client’s ability to secure housing.
  • Develop & maintain strong relationships with real estate agencies and bodies, as well as landlords, to support early intervention and prevention of homelessness.

You will have

  • Diploma or above tertiary qualification in a relevant social work or human services field
  • Experience working in the housing sector is required
  • Experience working in the family violence sector is desirable
  • Outreach experience demonstrating sound risk management practices and service delivery is essential
  • A working knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 is essential to the role
  • Highly developed time management and work prioritisation skills with an ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision required
  • Advance computer skills including experience in data and record management
  • Relevant child protection requirements are obtained for example Working with Children Check.
  • ​A current and valid Victorian driver’s licence

This is a full-time, permanent position located in Mackay, QLD. Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Social, Community, Home Card and Disability Services Level 4 Award.
