What you’ll be doing

The Drug and Alcohol Intake Clinician will primarily operate the district Intake and Referral Helpline and provide a daily drop-in service at the Illawarra Drug and Alcohol Service. The position will provide a welcoming and engaging environment to consumers and/or their families who are often seeking support for the first time. The position will provide high quality care ensuring the provision of evidence based interventions and optimal health outcomes consistent with ISLHD policies, procedures, standards, relevant legislation, and the NSW Health Code of Conduct. This position is part of the Intake Team based at the Illawarra Drug and Alcohol Service.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a TGA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior to commencement with NSW Health OR provide an approved medical contraindication certificate. You will be required to show proof of your COVID-19 vaccination status prior to securing this role. Please also provide proof of booster vaccination, if available.

Selection Criteria 

  1. Registration as a Psychologist with AHPRA, current authority to practice as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA, Social work degree with eligibility for registration with AASW, or other relevant 3 year level behavioural science/ counselling degree.
  2. Experience and knowledge of the drug and alcohol field.
  3. Knowledge of harm minimisation strategies.
  4. Experience in assessment and counselling, particularly crisis counselling.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of case management and active referral.
  6. Demonstrated ability in call management and intake processes.
  7. Excellent written, verbal communication and time management skills.
  8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
