headspace is Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year old’s.  The service is designed to make it as easy as possible for a young person and their family to get the help they need for problems affecting their wellbeing. Youturn is a not-for-profit organisation that started in 1989 to help address youth homelessness in Noosa.  Since then, the organisation and grown and evolved, and now provides health and social services to over 6,000 young people and their families annually, to assist them in achieving their full potential.

Youturn is the lead agency of five headspace centres across Southern Queensland that focus on early intervention for young people through a range of services.

The opportunity:

As the Intervention Worker you will engage, screen, assess, refer, provide interventions, and coordinate care for young people aged 12-25 years that contact or are referred to headspace Toowoomba. 

As one of the first contact points for young people accessing headspace Toowoomba, you will need to build positive rapport with a wide range of young people, as well as their family and friends. 

We are looking for someone with the skills to assess a young person’s needs, including complex risk assessments and the ability to action a plan to mitigate any identified risk. 

As the Intervention Worker you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes core clinical workers, contract clinical workers (General Practitioners and Allied Health Practitioners), consortium workers and core non-clinical workers. You will work closely with local community and partner youth and health services to provide holistic and integrated care. 

Some of your other responsibilities will include:

• participating in regular clinical supervision and  presenting and discussing cases with the multidisciplinary team.
• Conduct bio-psycho-social assessments of young people presenting to the service using the headspace assessment tool.
• Referring young people to internal and external services
• Providing clinical interventions and brief interventions to young people

Selection Criteria:

Essential 

• Hold full Registration with AHPRA, the Psychology Board of Australia and/or be an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and/or be an Accredited Mental Health Occupational Therapist and/or be an Mental Health Accredited Nurse.
• Tertiary qualifications in psychology, social work, occupational therapy, or mental health nursing.
• Knowledge and understanding of mental health, evidence-based interventions and clinical practice as well as demonstrated excellence in the practical application of such, in the areas of youth mental health and alcohol and drug use.
• Demonstrated ability to undertake initial screening activities and a comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment to determine care needs and provide appropriate follow up support.
• Experience in the delivery of brief therapeutic interventions, counselling services and treatment planning.
• Highly developed communication (including written) and interpersonal skills, and the ability to engage with young people, advocate on their behalf and establish and maintain effective relationships with workers, young people, carers and stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver individual or group based skills training activities to assist young people’s psychosocial functioning (eg life skills, anger management, problem solving, conflict resolution, etc).
• Demonstrated ability to apply risk management strategies within a clinical context.

Desirable

• Knowledge of local youth/health sectors
• Knowledge and understanding of trauma informed practice

Other Requirements 

• Hold a current ‘C’ class open driver’s license
• Hold a current Working with Children Check (Blue Card), if required, issued by the Queensland Government. 
• Youturn requires all its workplace participants to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with an approved COVID-19 vaccine, according to up-to-date health advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) or a State or Federal Government; or provide a valid exemption certificate.
