Ngwala Willumbong Aboriginal Corporation is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation that is dedicated to delivering quality specialist Alcohol and Drug Treatment, Housing and Homeless and other services to meet the needs of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) People and their families. Our services operate across Victoria.

 

The job 

The Koori Access Project (KAP) aims to increase treatment completion for Aboriginal People at residential drug and alcohol withdrawal services. The main aim is to support clients through the Community Residential Withdrawal (CRW) assessments, intake and treatment process and with any post withdrawal treatment needs that have been identified as part of that clients Individual Treatment Plan. 

Reporting to the Clinical Services Coordinator and working within the clinical services delivery team, the KAP worker will work with individuals, organisations and communities to ensure higher completion rates of residential withdrawal (eg. detox units). They are to provide culturally safe outreach support to Aboriginal people who are affected by alcohol and/or other drug use.

Your Skills and Experience

  • Certificate IV in AOD or relevant equivalent qualifications 
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and commitment to the Aboriginal community
  • Demonstrated ability and experience of working with Aboriginal people, families and communities.
  • Strong knowledge of Victorian Aboriginal communities, including their history and an awareness of the issues that affect communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Alcohol and Other Drug issues that impact Aboriginal communities.
  • High level of culturally safe communication skills when dealing with Aboriginal people with AOD issues.
  • Demonstrating a high level of professionalism, working in highly complex and difficult situations
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi skilled team
  • Skills in working independently, with initiative and as a team member
  • Willingness and ability to work within and contribute to the vision, purpose and core values of the organisation. 

Ability to communicate effectively with service providers and to advocate on behalf of clients.
