About the Role:

The Koorie Liaison Officers roles and responsibilities follow the Wurreker and Aboriginal Education Strategy commitments made by Melbourne Polytechnic by making education accessible and culturally inclusive for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 

The Koorie Liaison Officer is a valued member of the Koorie Services Centre team, working in a flexible and collegiate manner to ensure Melbourne Polytechnic maintains beneficial relationships with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and networks. 

The Koorie Liaison Officer oversees the supports of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at Melbourne Polytechnic and augments the cultural inclusiveness and competency of Melbourne Polytechnics learning environments and staff. 

Duties:

  • Provide high level cultural support and assistance at the request of Melbourne Polytechnic teachers that positively supports the outcomes of their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at Melbourne Polytechnic.
  • Regularly liaise with relevant Melbourne Polytechnic teams to ensure course content accurately and respectfully embeds Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into the course curriculum.
  • Liaise with other relevant Melbourne Polytechnic staff to develop and coordinate activities and events relating to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at Melbourne Polytechnic.
  • Independently reviews the cultural inclusivity of Melbourne Polytechnic learning environments and identifies areas and projects that could be developed to augment cultural inclusivity and works to develop and implement plans to address these areas.
  • Provides high level advice on any necessary cultural awareness, competency or safety training, guidance or mentoring to Melbourne Polytechnic staff for professional development or as part of internal events (e.g., Reconciliation Week or NAIDOC Week).
  • Independently builds strong positive and beneficial relationships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, organisations and stakeholders on behalf of Melbourne Polytechnic.
  • Works in collaboration with the Koorie Services Centre team to maintain data relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at Melbourne Polytechnic and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance that prioritising Aboriginal Education, mental health, cultural identity and safety, and gender diversity has on student wellbeing.
  • Detailed understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kinship systems, histories, knowledges, ways of being, societal systems and cultures.

Skills and Experience Required: 

  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience, ideally within the education sector or Koorie organisational sector.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and community networks.
  • High level communication and interpersonal skills for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • High level report writing skills for a range of stakeholders (reports, brief, etc.)
  • Demonstrated strong Koorie community networks and connects to support desired outcomes for Koorie students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience of enhancing cultural competency and fostering cultural inclusiveness.
