Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing Service (BWAHS) are the lead specialists in Aboriginal specific family violence services across the Eastern Metropolitan Region. The organisation has developed an excellent record of providing high quality family violence and trauma informed intensive case management, integrated family service responses and evidence based therapeutic programs to individuals and groups for a whole family approach.
The Men’s counsellor position is a specialist position designed to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men who have been impacted by family violence. This position will provide a range of individual therapeutic responses to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men to promote their healing and recovery from the effects of their experience of family violence and other trauma experiences.
The Men’s Counsellor will provide brief interventions and case support responses to assist clients to attend groups and counselling programs. They will use an Aboriginal family violence lens to deliver individual trauma-informed assessment and therapies to Aboriginal men, children and their families who are impacted and/or have experienced family violence, and to support people who use violence.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
- An understanding of contemporary Aboriginal culture and the history of inter-generational trauma.
- A tertiary qualification in social work, psychology, family therapy, art therapy or a related discipline along with demonstrated experience.
- Theoretical understanding of the issues underpinning family violence, and therapeutic interventions in an Aboriginal cultural context.
- Experience in provision of trauma informed, culturally safe, therapeutic approaches to support safety and healing from family violence to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families, children or young people.
- Ability to engage men and their families of varying ages, stages and compositions, who have multiple and complex needs.
- Knowledge of services in the Eastern Metropolitan Region and/or a willingness to learn.
- Understanding of State and Regional Aboriginal family violence strategies and frameworks.
- Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively and the capacity to negotiate and liaise with volunteers, including carers, DHHS, support agencies and the Community.
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a small team.
- Willingness to embrace opportunities for professional development where appropriate.
