About this opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Men’s Suicide Prevention Worker/ Peer Worker to join our supportive team here at Wellways Australia. This position will be based with Wellways, however the program is part of a larger project funded by Health North Coast PHN.

Priority Population – Suicide Prevention Program Peer Workers

Intentionally drawing upon their own lived experience of managing mental health concerns, Suicide Prevention Workers share their personal experiences of dealing with suicide distress through a blend of individual and group approaches to encourage men to reach out and connect with each other and available support networks.

Men’s Suicide Prevention Workers also work alongside training providers to assist with the delivery of workshops that support men to develop resilience and coping mechanisms. An example of this approach may be working alongside Relationships Australia to deliver a workshop around healthy relationships.

Working individually, Men’s Suicide Prevention Workers provide a trauma informed, non-clinical, practical support service aimed at supporting men at a time and place that suits them to access support to navigate distress. Supporting this, Men’s Suicide Prevention Workers develop relationships with a wide range of local GP’s and other allied health providers to help navigate Men access these services.

To be successful in this role, you will possess the following.

  • Lived experience of mental health problems and recovery, either as a person with mental health issues or in a caring role
  • A contemporary understanding of mental health issues and recovery orientated mental health practice
  • Completion of the Certificate 4 in Mental Health, Certificate 4 in Mental Health Peer Work or Certificate 4 in Community Services, or equivalent practical experience working in a lived experience role.
  • Appropriate IT skills
  • Satisfactory Police Records Check (no older than 12 months)
  • NSW Working with Children Check
  • Right to Work within Australia
  • Current valid driver’s license
  • NDIS Worker Orientation Module- https://www.ndiscommission.gov.au/workers/training-course
  • NDIS Worker Screening Check
  • Full COVID-19 Booster vaccination Certificate or valid medical exemption
