An exciting opportunity exists to work as part of the Acute Care Mental Health Team at Sutherland Mental Health Service.  The team provides acute care and crisis services to mental health clients in the Sutherland catchment area, or who present to the emergency department of Sutherland Hospital. The role is a challenging one and ideal for someone who is looking at developing their skills and experience and making a positive difference in peoples’ lives.

This position will plan, coordinate and deliver high quality acute mental health care to consumers consistent with South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) policies, procedures and standards. The hours of work involve a 7 day rotating roster with morning and afternoon shifts. The role involves a range of specialist mental health interventions within a multidisciplinary team including triage, comprehensive assessments, risk assessments, clinical formulation, management of risks and safety planning, brief psycho-education and close liaison with all relevant stakeholders as part of collaborative care and discharge planning. 

Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.

Selection Criteria

  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications, eligible for registration with AHPRA (if Occupational Therapist, Psychologist or a Registered nurse) or membership with AASW (if Social Worker)
  2. Demonstrated core competency skills in Mental Health interventions in the Community and experience in providing comprehensive mental health assessments, risk assessment, safety planning and the provision of collaborative care and discharge planning
  3. Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to proactively engage with patients/clients to enhance service delivery
  4. Demonstrated experience working with people with an acute mental illness or disorder
  5. Demonstrated experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to exercise independent professional judgement on routine matters
  6. Demonstrated computer skills and the capacity to use health information systems
  7. Understanding and knowledge of mental health principles of consumer focused and strengths based practices in acute community mental health setting
  8. Current drivers licence (or a willingness to travel in accordance with the demands of the position)
