What you’ll be doing

The Safeguards Team is a new dedicated CAMHS resource designed to provide innovative and best practice care to children and adolescents aged 0-17 years experiencing acute mental health distress. The team is community based and provides rapid, mobile and flexible care to resolve mental health crisis, including assertive outreach, care coordination and time-limited therapeutic interventions.  The Safeguards Team operates 7 days/week with extended hours on weekdays, and will respond to young people in their schools, homes and communities and in hospital-based settings (EDs/Wards), through face to face, phone and telehealth appointments.
 
Increase capacity of the service to address the acute needs of Child and Adolescent consumers and carers who are in a mental health crisis. This position will be located within the acute team and support the assessment and transition of children and young people to Children and Adolescent and Youth Mental Health Services or other appropriate treatment providers.  This role is aligned to the Premier’s Priority to address the needs of vulnerable populations for Homelessness, Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, which will be impacted by COVID-19.

The clinician will work in collaboration with the Child and Adolescent Consultation Liaison Service to ensure assertive outreach needs are in place for consumers of the service.  This includes specialist mental health services as well as tertiary consultation to children and young people in community settings including schools, youth accommodation, homes and other community settings.   

The clinician will facilitate, implement and evaluate care management pathways for consumers with complex health needs who are at risk of admission to hospital.  This includes identifying and developing relations with community partners to facilitate pathways to appropriate services.

The applicant must be certified as compliant with Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases  before employment can commence.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Qualification as a Registered Nurse, Psychologist or Allied Health Professional or relevant degree in Health. Must have current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (if applicable) and/or eligibility for membership of a relevant peak body professional association.
  2. Extensive direct clinical experience of Child and Adolescent presentations, including demonstrated complex acute assessment, care planning and treatment
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in using evidence-based family and individual intervention models to support children, adolescents, young people and their carers to engage in appropriate mental health care in the community.
  4. Sound interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to consult, liaise and negotiate with a range of individuals including: consumers, families and other health providers.
  5. Demonstrated ability to problem solve complex situations, deliver results, and complete tasks and projects in a timely manner.
  6. Ability to initiate, lead, complete and share quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation processes and lead ongoing quality improvement activities with other staff.
  7. Understanding of NSW Mental Health Act (2007).
  8. Current NSW Drivers licence (class C – unrestricted).
