We are seeking expressions of interest for potential vacancies, subject to confirmation of contract extension. It is anticipated that this position will commence in January 2023.
Context Statement: Batchelor Institute is the only First Nations dual sector tertiary education provider in Australia. The Institute gives precedence to its philosophy of Both Ways: positioning First Nations peoples as knowledge holders in all educational transactions with Western knowledge systems as well as privileging First Nations ways of learning and teaching to underpin our engagement with mainstream education systems and society more broadly.
Primary Objective: The Army Indigenous Development Program (AIDP) is a team effort by military staff, academic lecturers, tutors and mentors to help prepare students for enlistment into the Army. Mentors provide support during academic studies and facilitate after hours activities. Mentors work on a rotational roster Monday to Friday and on weekends.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Day to day management of the mentoring team, including rostering and attendance management.
- Liaison with Officer Commanding (OC) RFSG Training and Education Centre (RTEC), military staff and lecturers including participation in regular progress monitoring meetings with relevant military staff no less than once per month.
- Attend and contribute to weekly meetings with the OC Indigenous Development Wing and other key personnel to coordinate the running of the program, plan events, develop risk assessments and address any issues as they arise. Compilation of Mentor weekly reports to present to key personnel during Board of Studies meetings.
- Mentoring and supervision of participants throughout the program on base and during any mentor led off-site activities.
- Lead the planning and delivery of presentations and provide mentor support during evening and weekend activities. These activities are to include the delivery of life skills training, cultural awareness sessions, group team building and other activities, including one community engagement activity. These activities should aim to improve the trainees’ life skills, encourage, and improve teamwork, build confidence, and develop leadership qualities.
- Mentoring of individual trainees to ensure optimal personal development and the appropriate management of any issues being faced to ensure that at the end of the program, each trainee can transition into the workforce or further education.
- Mentor and support trainees during daily academic studies and while completing homework and other education tasks.
- Liaise with military staff to provide trainees’ transportation to activities, appointments, and vocational training.
- Develop and maintain accurate daily records on each trainees’ progress and challenges throughout the programs, including any actions required to remediate disadvantages.
- Participate and contribute to team meetings and professional development opportunities.
Selection Criteria – Essential
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in culturally diverse teams within the social, political, and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities and organisations.
- Qualification in Mentoring and/or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated ability preparing reports, developing rosters and leading teams.
- The ability to work collaboratively with Defence staff and respond to reasonable advice.
- Hold a current (Open) Driver’s Licence and Light Rigid License with experience driving a 22-seater bus and hold a nationally recognised and current First Aid certificate.
- Demonstrated ability to assist with trainee’s academic tasks and associated homework and to role model leadership, teamwork and peer support behaviours.
- Demonstrated initiative, self-starting ability, model professional behaviour at all times and lead by example.
- Ability to demonstrate cultural understanding and empathy.
- Understanding of Work Health and Safety principles and practices, and ability to comply with Institute WHS Policies and Procedures.

- Copies of qualifications must be submitted.
- Applicants must have an Ochre Card and a current Police Check and/or the ability to obtain these prior to commencement. The Ochre card and Police check must be submitted to the Department of Defence for approval
