About The Role

The Peer Support Worker draws from personal experiences of mental illness and recovery to model hope, encouraging clients towards a fulfilling life. This role involves building rapport, inspiring hope, and utilising a skill set developed through lived experience and formal training to benefit clients. 

This is a Permanent Part Time, 3 days a week role based at Nowra.

Key responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Ensure the best possible outcome for participants is achieved by assisting them to establish strong links to formal and informal supports within the local area.
  • Seek to learn about the clients’ interests, their connections to family, friends etc and work with the client in building their capacity to be part of their community.
  • Assist clients to connect with appropriate community supports, promoting clients’ rights and access to services.
  • Provide emotional support to clients by constructively applying lessons learnt through your own lived experience, i.e., be a bearer of hope that recovery can and does occur.
  • Share and discuss common and mutual experiences with people accessing services that support the development of safe and trusting relationships.
  • Support clients at their immediate point of crisis and assist with the development of a safety plan to allow the person to return home safely.
  • Maintain a personal strength-based, trauma-informed and recovery-oriented outlook that engenders a sense of hope and resilience in clients.
  • Assist and guide staff with client intake and referral processes.
  • Provide support within outreach settings.
  • Support in recovery planning and goal setting with clients.
  • Ensure documentation meets organisational, legislative and funding requirements by completing and maintaining appropriate participant documentation and statistical information.

 

About You:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications such as Certificate 3 in Community Services, Mental Health or Peer Work or studying towards higher level qualification.
  • Lived experience of mental illness, mental health crisis or caring for someone living with a mental illness and demonstrated experience of recovery. Ability to draw upon personal recovery journey to inform work.
  • NSW Unrestricted Drivers licence
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in similar role as a peer support worker desirable
  • Ability to establish relationships and maintain appropriate boundaries with people accessing the service and their families.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment, as well as independently.
  • Covid19 vaccination is strongly recommended
  • Valid paid Working with Children Check (WWC)
