Tweed Mental Health Services is pursuing a Health Education Officer Non Grad to join their Safe Haven team. The Safe Haven Team aims to reduce deaths by suicide and suicide attempts by providing rapid, appropriate and compassionate care to people at risk of suicide in an alternative non clinical environment. It is facilitated by clinicians and peer workers and accessible out of usual business hours. People may self present, be redirected by the Emergency Department or other Health services, brought in by ambulance or police services or referred by local stakeholders such as GPs, community managed organisations or crisis response services.Safe Haven is primarily a non clinical service though supported by a clinician as it is recognised people may attend seeking clinical support. Support is person centred and recovery orientated. Suicide prevention Peer Workers will provide person centred recovery oriented and trauma informed peer support. Peer Support Workers are integral and equal members of the team and draw on their lived experience of recovery from suicidality to provide authentic engagement and support and instil confidence and hope about the journey of recovery.

 

If you have/are:

  • Qualifications in mental health, community services or peer work (or a willingness to complete same within 18 months of commencing the position) OR substantial experience in a mental health peer worker role within public mental health or alcohol and other drug service or the non government sector
  • A personal lived experience of suicidality and demonstrated understanding of your own recovery process with capacity to utilise your own lived experience of suicidality and recovery, to constructively support and advocate for people during suicidal crisis
  • Understanding of, and commitment to person led recovery principles and trauma informed care, as well as working with Aboriginal people in a holistic, collaborative and respectful way in the context of suicidality
  • Capacity to work collaboratively with people accessing the service, families and carers, colleagues, other NSWE Health personnel and other stakeholders, applying attributes such as courage, integrity, optimism and humour
