Where you’ll be working

Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is responsible for providing primary and secondary health care for people living in the Auburn, Blacktown, and The Hills Shire, Holroyd and Parramatta Local Government Areas (LGAs) and tertiary care to residents of the Greater Western Region. What you’ll be doing

The Westmead Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) is a new specialist inpatient mental health facility designed to provide assessment and treatment for women with severe mental health problems in pregnancy and up until a child is one year old.  The Mother Baby Unit provides innovative, holistic and best practice multidisciplinary care that is parent and infant centred, family and carer inclusive, and culturally sensitive. 
 
The Perinatal and Infant Mental Health Peer Worker will be based at the Westmead MBU and report to the Allied Health Lead, PCYMH Inpatient. The position will have their own personal knowledge, skills and lived experience of being a mother with baby. The Mother Baby Unit holistically focuses on bonding, adaptability, and all facets of mothercraft in which the Peer Worker will support Women and their babies in this therapeutic environment.  The Peer Worker working in this setting will have their experience of mental distress, illness and challenges during the perinatal period, accompanied by experiences of personal recovery, hope and resiliency. To be effective in this role the Peer Worker will need to be in a place of recovery and wellness to be able to support and advocate for other Women currently experiencing mental distress, challenges and illness at this stage of their life.    

The term ?perinatal? refers to both the antenatal and postnatal periods combined, from conception though to 24 months after baby?s birth.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Understanding of and commitment to consumer led recovery principles in the perinatal timeframe with the ability to utilise your lived and living experiences to support others with their own mental health recovery journey. Demonstrating stories of hope and resiliency.
  2. Have your own lived and living experience of mental ill health and recovery as a mother with child including using mental health services.
  3. Demonstrated ability to individually advocate and systemically advocate for mental health consumers.
  4. Willingness and commitment to undertake Certificate IV in Peer Work Mental Health qualification.
  5. Demonstrated good written and verbal communication skills, including the use of Microsoft office.
  6. Good organisational and planning skills to organise one?s own daily work. Ability to work independently and as part of a team and actively contribute to the further development of Peer Work in WSLHD.
  7. Have a current driver?s license and be able to work across different locations in WSLHD when needed.
  8. Knowledge and understanding of the areas of mental health that relate to the perinatal timeframe and including relevant policy and guidance.
