headspace is Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds.  The service is designed to make it as easy as possible for a young person and their family to get the help they need for problems affecting their wellbeing. Youturn is the lead agency of five headspace centres across Southern Queensland that focus on early intervention for young people through a range of services.

Youturn is a not-for-profit organisation that started in 1989 to help address youth homelessness in Noosa.  Since then, the organisation and grown and evolved, and now provides health and social services to over 6,000 young people and their families annually, to assist them in achieving their full potential.

The Opportunity

The role of the Psychosocial Support Service worker is to provide non-clinical psychosocial supports to young people aged 12-25 years of age as well as their families and carers (as appropriate), that are referred to headspace Caboolture to achieve their recovery goals.  This role is complementary to the clinical mental health team. 

headspace Caboolture aims to provide evidence-based, developmentally appropriate and family inclusive care and this role is an important part of the multidisciplinary team at headspace Caboolture. 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Provide youth friendly, flexible, care coordination and culturally appropriate short term, low intensity support (non-clinical) for young people with mental health presentations using a strength-based, solutions focused approach to assist young people, their family, carers and support networks to work in a collaborative way. This also includes the provision of psychosocial group programs. 
  • Support young people where there may be co-occurring conditions such as intellectual, cognitive, physical disabilities and/or substance use disorders. 
  • Support young people to navigate different domains such as access to physical and mental health, substance use, social isolation, family violence, housing and justice system services. 
  • Contribute to the assessment of the young person and family’s needs, with a particular emphasis on assessing their capacity and strengths. 
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to support decision making processes relating to young people and their families, friends and carers including participation in multidisciplinary case meetings.  
  • Work from a person centred and family inclusive framework of practice to facilitate the improvement of mental health outcomes for young people and their families. 
  • Work flexibly to respond to the needs of young people and their families. This may include, liaising, engaging and consulting with local stakeholders including schools, community organisations, service providers, health and medical services and communities. 
  • Participate in outreach (travel), telehealth and home visit modes of service delivery for young people and their families.

Essential

  • Certificate IV or working towards Certification IV in Mental Health or other relevant post-secondary qualifications in Health, Disability, Education, Youth Work or Community Development setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage meaningfully with young people and their family and friends with a passion and determination to make a difference to the social and emotional wellbeing of young people and their families.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with and knowledge of young people with mental health, disabilities, alcohol and other drug, and other social issues. 
  • Ability to work independently and seek guidance and support, when necessary, as part of a multidisciplinary team. 
  • Experience in the delivery of psychosocial support interventions including but not limited to, building living skills, budgeting, building social connections, increasing access to community organisations and capacity to live independently. 
  • Understanding of the challenges and experiences of young people from diverse backgrounds including young people who are culturally and linguistically diverse, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and LGBTQIA+.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) to effectively liaise, build relationships and partnerships, consult and negotiate with a wide variety of stakeholders. 
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating youth programs, events and activities, and in the delivery of group programs to support young people and their families and friends.
  • A broad understanding of the challenges and experiences of young people in Australia, including specific community factors.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage multiple and competing work tasks and deliver to agreed deadlines.
  • Desirable: Knowledge and understanding of local youth mental health stakeholders and key relationships in these sectors.
  • Desirable: Knowledge and understanding of trauma informed practice.
     

Other Requirements

  • Successful applicants will also need to hold a ‘C’ class Open driver licence, State Working with Children Check and hold, or be eligible to apply for, a Licensed Care Suitability Check issued by the QLD Department of Child Safety, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs. 
  • Youturn requires all its workplace participants to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with an approved COVID-19 vaccine, according to up-to-date health advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) or a State or Federal Government; or provide a valid exemption certificate.
