JOB DESCRIPTION

Ruth’s Women’s Shelter is a feminist organisation that has been providing crisis accommodation and support for women and children at risk of Family or Domestic Violence since 1977. Our Vision is to End Violence against women and their children.

We are seeking Support Workers who embody Ruth’s values of Respect, Safety, Empowerment, Integrity and Collaboration.

Who are we looking for:

After Hours Support Workers x 2 – Perm Part-Time. These roles have become available due to internal staff movements. 

Role 1 (33h per fortnight)

Week 1

Monday, Wednesday 5pm-8am (Sleepover Shift 10.30pm-7am On Call On Site)

Sunday 9am – 5pm 

Week 2 

Monday, Wednesday 5pm-8am (Sleepover Shift 10.30pm-7am On Call On Site)

 

Role 2 (28h per fortnight)

Week 1

Tuesday 5pm-8am (Sleepover Shift 10.30pm-7am On Call On Site)

Saturday 5pm-9am (Temp until June 2024) (Sleepover Shift 10.30pm-7am On Call On Site)

Week 2 

Tuesday 5pm-8am (Sleepover Shift 10.30pm-7am On Call On Site)

Sunday 9am – 5pm 

You will be responsible for providing support to women and their children who have been affected by family and domestic violence. You will have an inclusive, person centred, strength base and trauma informed work practice. 

Your role will report to the Team Leader and Manager. 

Your responsibilities will be:

  • Exercise judgement and initiative when undertaking responsibility for new client intakes and initial assessment
  • Provide emotional support, care and safety to women and children experiencing domestic violence and family violence.
  • Identify immediate needs and provide crisis interventions using an approach which demonstrates cultural sensitivity.
  • Identify and record relevant information to the case files which is accurate, concise and relevant.
  • Provide appropriate hand over to incoming workers 
  • Liaise with government and non-government agencies and services as required.
  • To encourage residents to complete their household chores/washing and keep the shelter clean and tidy.
  • Participate in the practical day-to-day operations of the Shelter i.e. cleaning, bed making, tidying, sorting donations, organising, maintenance.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as requested by the Team Leader.

  • Salary Packaging Benefits up to $15,900 of your annual salary tax free. Less tax = more take home pay for you.
  • Part-time employees who work for more than four ordinary hours on 10 or more weekends will be entitled to 5 weeks (pro rata) Annual Leave plus the higher amount of either 17.5% Annual Leave loading or the weekend and shift penalties the employee would have received had they not been on leave during the relevant period.

  1. Qualifications in / working towards a completed Social Science degree or equivalent academic qualification and / or experience to enable the person to competently perform all the requirements of the position.
  2. Sound knowledge and understanding of effects and causes of domestic violence from a feminist perspective including knowledge of cultural differences and needs.
  3. Demonstrate skills of support, advocacy and crisis intervention.
  4. Ability to work independently and cooperatively within a team environment to attain the organisational goal.
  5. Ability to liaise with government and non-government agencies and to advocate on behalf of clients.
  6. Demonstrate a working knowledge of Domestic Violence legislation / Human Rights / Child Rights.
  7. A high level of written and verbal interpersonal communication skills including the ability to develop and update resources.
  8. Ability to apply and exercise use of digital, technological concepts

Please note, before commencing employment with Ruth’s you will be required to hold or be willing to obtain a Working with Children Check (Blue Card), Driver License and a First Aid and CPR certificate.
