JOB DESCRIPTION

headspace Mt Druitt, Parramatta and Penrith delivers the Youth Early Psychosis Program (hYEPP), this program focuses on supporting young people who are at risk of developing a first episode of psychosis, or those that are currently experiencing psychosis.  The Mobile Assessment & Treatment Team is the mobile outreach to those who cannot access the headspace centres.

Role Overview

The overall aims of clinical care within the Mobile Assessment and Treatment Team service will include:

• Assertive home-based care in the community, conducting assessments, general mental health support, guidance and direction

• The early detection of those young people who are experiencing, or are at risk of early psychosis or a first episode of psychosis by means of thorough assessment, consultation with the medical and broader clinical team

• Intervene early and effectively with young people at risk of a first episode of psychosis to prevent the onset of psychotic illness

Essential Criteria:

  • Approved tertiary qualifications in relevant discipline and eligibility for membership of AHPRA or the appropriate professional body
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the mental health sector with community health experience
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership in a multidisciplinary team and skills in staff supervision and support, providing clinical expertise and direction both on an individual and team level
  • Substantial experience in acute mental health care, including completion of mental health and bio-psycho-social assessments, crisis interventions and short term psychosocial treatment for young people experiencing mental health difficulties and their families, ideally with early and first episode psychosis young people and their families/significant others
  • Substantial experience and demonstrated skills in crisis intervention and management of young people in the acute phase of a mental illness, preferably in home or community based settings and ideally with early and first episode psychosis young people and their families
  • Experience and demonstrated skills in developing positive referral processes and relationships so as to provide early intervention, engagement and prompt crisis and acute service responses to early psychosis and first episode psychosis young people and their families/significant others
  • Specific knowledge and understanding of early psychosis and first episode psychosis rationale and principles, along with the developmental stages of young people and the impact that a first episode of psychosis has on a young person’s development and on the family/significant other
  • Ability to maintain the philosophy, standards, guidelines, policies and protocols of the EPPIC model and the organisation and to promote the early intervention and recovery of young people with a first episode of psychosis
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act (2007) and the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act (1998) and other relevant legislation
