Senior Intake Worker (HP2/3) 

About the role: 

Think Mental Health (TMH) is the lead agency responsible for delivering Canberra Head to Health.  This position is a new role identified to support increased demand and complexity of individuals engaging with the service.  The Intake stream is responsible for both the phone and walk in sides of the service.  The team provides both phone and in-person support, intake assessments and referrals of consumers presenting with mental health needs.  The team is responsible for supporting individuals presenting in distress, including escalating to tertiary care as necessary.  

The role is ideally full-time and is a fixed-term contract until 30 June 2025 with opportunity for extension dependent on ongoing Commonwealth funding. 

Responsibilities and Duties: 

Client services: 

  • Provision of intake services using the Commonwealth developed standardised needs assessment tool (IAR: Initial Assessment and Referral), via telephone, online and face-to-face. 
  • Provision of support, information, and advice to consumers and those involved with the care of individuals in psychological distress. 
  • Provision of service navigation and warm referral pathways to support consumers and carers/family members to connect with appropriate care options in our region. 
  • Development of staff skills & competence in delivering intake services, including modelling, observation & feedback to new staff. 
  • Provision of support and guidance to more junior staff supporting distressed & complex consumer presentations. 
  • Provision of triage, service navigation advice & guidance to staff when the Clinical Lead is unavailable. 

Administrative services: 

  • Maintain all documentation as required by the operational guidelines. 
  • Assist in the development and documentation of referral pathways. 
  • Facilitation of group reflective supervision to intake staff team. 
  • Data entry as required by the operational guidelines. 

Essential Criteria: 

  • Registration (or association membership) as a health professional, qualifications considered include; Social Work, Psychology, RN/EN or similar.  
  • Experience assessing and supporting individuals in distress and those in crisis. 
  • Experience within the Mental Health sector. 
  • Positive attitude and genuine interest in mental health care.
