  • Full Time Ongoing Position (76 Fortnightly Hours).
  • $83,275 + Super + Salary Packaging* (to increase your take home pay).

Who we are looking for

The Specialised Family Violence (SFVS) Counsellor offers individual, couples, and family counseling, prioritizing the safety and well-being of children. They address complex relationship and social issues, including parenting challenges, relationship breakdown, domestic violence, mental health, substance misuse, problem gambling, and childhood trauma. The SFVS Counsellor provides age-appropriate therapeutic support for children affected by family and domestic violence, helping families understand the impacts of FDV on children.

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • An in-depth understanding of adverse childhood experiences, including Family and Domestic Violence, child abuse, neglect, and institutional trauma, considering cultural and intergenerational contexts.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the psychological, social, gendered, and political aspects of Family and Domestic Violence, with a focus on safety within a framework.
  • Proven ability to work with families and children affected by Domestic and Family Violence, including engagement with perpetrators and facilitating therapeutic behavior change groups.
  • Commitment to culturally competent practice, effective communication across diverse backgrounds, and sensitive response to various situations.
  • Tertiary qualification (AQF level 8) in social work, psychology, counselling or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals, couples or families in a therapeutic context.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing counselling to those effected by Family and Domestic Violence including children and those using violence in relationships.

It would be a bonus if you have:

  • Post graduate (AQF level 9) qualification in social work, psychology, counselling or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating therapeutic Family and Domestic Violence behaviour change groups.

 

What you will be doing

  • Providing high quality counseling and group interventions tailored to the diverse needs of individuals, groups, and communities.
  • Conducting thorough holistic screening and risk assessment using the Detection of Overall Risk Screen (DOORS) tool for complex relationship and social issues.
  • Prioritizing client safety by employing screening tools and making appropriate reports and referrals.
  • Assisting clients affected by FDV and engaging with individuals who use violent behaviours in their relationships to support change.
  • Ensuring commitment to culturally competent practice and ability to work and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and to respond sensitively and appropriately to people in a variety of situations.
  • Providing current evidence-based practices such as family therapy, narrative therapy, strength based therapies, behavioural therapies (eg DBT or CBT) and trauma informed practices, consistent with RASAs practice approach.
