StandBy is Australia’s leading suicide postvention program dedicated to assisting people and communities bereaved or impacted by suicide.

StandBy builds community preparedness and resilience through extensive training to community and professional groups to ensure effectiveness and that duplicated effort is avoided.  The program offers coordinated evidence-based support and resources (including connections to local services and groups) that is individualised for each person’s unique circumstance.  StandBy is guided by local advisory groups – which includes community stakeholders as well as those with Lived Experience

The Opportunity

The StandBy Outreach Worker is responsible for assisting in the delivering of support for people bereaved or impacted by suicide through community engagement, education and training, as well as other events and activities. 

The role leads and coordinates support sessions, provides individual support to people bereaved by suicide and identifies support needs through risk assessment, screening, and development of ongoing support plans.

Some of the other key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and coordinating support sessions, including completing home visit checklists, travel forms, and ensuring consent, privacy, and confidentiality requirements are met.
  • Taking a proactive approach to community development practice, including leveraging knowledge of local community infrastructure and networks.
  • Conducting risk assessments, including assessing suicide and violence risks.
  • Managing data and compliance administration for service provision requirements, including evaluation, reporting (e.g., workplans, progress reports, and advisory group reports), and meeting other performance measures in line with organisational, contractual, and legislative frameworks.
  • Undertaking collaborative activities and managing community-based projects, including planning and evaluation, while effectively engaging with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Actively participating in regular meetings with your line manager and engaging in external supervision as required.

Essential Requirements

  • Relevant Tertiary qualifications or substantial experience in a relevant Allied Health or community services discipline including psychology, counselling, mental health, social work, or community development.
  • Demonstrated experience of knowledge/skills of best practice relating to suicide postvention.
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead and coordinate support sessions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and experience in suicide postvention service provision and associated issues, bereavement and/or related disciplines such as trauma, grief and loss with demonstrated evidence of sector engagement, community development and partnerships.
  • Highly developed communication (both verbal and written) and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to operate Windows applications at an intermediate general level, including the following Microsoft applications: Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, and demonstrated experience in working with a national database.
  • Ability to work autonomously or with limited guidance, demonstrating strong self-management and personal care skills.
  • Ability to undertake collaborative activities, manage community-based projects including planning and evaluation all while engaging with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Desirable: Master qualification or Higher in relevant fields: psychology, counselling, mental health, social work, or community development.
  • Desirable: Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).

 

Other Requirements

  • Candidates must reside in the Alice Springs area and be comfortable traveling via light aircraft.
  • This hybrid role includes working both remotely and in an office, with occasional travel across the Northern Territory and overnight stays outside Alice Springs.
  • Successful applicants will also need to hold a ‘C’ class Open driver licence, State Working with Children Check and hold, or be eligible to apply for, a Licensed Care Suitability Check issued by the QLD Department of Child Safety, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs.
